Default Unanswered: Porter's weird pooping

Our new pyrenees, Porter, poops like no dog I've ever seen. He will squat and then WHILE he is pooping, he turns in a full 360 degree circle. I have never seen a dog do that while pooping. He does it every time he poops. I don't see anything wrong with his stool. It looks completely normal to me. And he doesn't appear to be in any pain at all. I wonder why he does that. I didn't know dogs could turn while they were pooping.

My English Setter did that too! It was the oddest thing, almost like he wanted to see what was coming out. I have never had or heard of another dog doing that until now! Just a quirk I think

I talked to someone about it on the pyrenees forum and they said that some dogs feel really vulnerable while doing their business. Some dogs go and hide and some go use the furthest part of the yard, etc. The lady also said that some dogs will turn while going poo just to make sure that nothing sneaks up on them while they are going. It makes sense to me. Otherwise I don't see the reason why they would do it.

Talking

My Max (Paxer) will do a 90 degree turn. I will be watching from the doorway to see 'how things are' and darn he will do that turn and then I can't see. And I don't think he is doing it because he knows I am watching--sometimes he doesn't know I am watching! With him I think it is not being able to go right away and the moving helps! Lol, what a subject! I watch so I know if he is having a hard time going or/and to see what the 'consistency is like'----health concerns! Lol, guess you could call it a 'health check up!

Ive seen dogs do this quite often.. i think it does have something to do with privacy or fear of something sneaking up on them bc many of the dogs i see doing that are shelter dogs or were shelter dogs at one point.

Sometimes it goes away once the dog feels comfortable and secure but sometimes it becomes a habit and thats just how they poop forever.

Great Pyrenees are guard dogs. I was told that a lot of them do that or something similar to make sure nothing can sneak up on them or what they are supposed to be guarding.

I was going to say that it is most likely a "watching ones own back" sort of thing given the pyres natural instinct of guarding. Kato kinda does it but not all the way around as he will find a fenced corner protecting his rear, faces out and turns within the area thats not covered by the fences
