Default Unanswered: too much licking?

We adopted a 2 yr old Pekingese/Japanese Chin female 2 months ago. She is very affectionate. She loves to lick us all the time. I will tell her to stop but it takes a few times, and also pushing her away before she does. Is this just a very affectionate dog or could there be something wrong?

i dont thinks theres something wrong she just loves licking but the problem is that she must understand that she can only lick you when you want her too....
so you need to stop her every time she does it without talking to her just to take her down on the floor...but its just a suggestion im not a dog trainer..

There's no problem. He just loves you. Porter would lick my face off if I let him. Now that would be a problem.

that's what I thought. A co-worker with my husband kept trying to tell him that the dog may be sick because she is always licking us. Thanks for the info - I will try and be more forceful on the "no"s

Dogs primarily lick for 2 reasons of which none have to do with them being sick. Many small breeds are just prone to licking. It is a sign of adoration and is to be somewhat expected in the breed. Papillons are notorious for this. The other reason is that dogs are attracted to salt. When we perspire even when we do not realize it, the body excretes sodium which the dog can sense and will want to lick. There is nothing wrong with a dog licking. I go through this with several of mine all the time. Eventually with the telling them no, they learn.

I have this problem with my dog.. mainly because i taught my dog to give me kisses and now she gives them to me all the time. She doesnt really lick other ppls face and is long as she doesnt lick me while my mouth is opened i dont mind getting kisses from her When i do want her to stop i just say off and she gets on the floor.

Our Akita pup licked us like crazy the first 2 months. She still does it but not as frequent although when I rub her belly she can go crazy trying to mouth me or lick me sometimes. I think the owner is the best qualified at noting whether it's affection verse something else.

correct one note, excessive licking of people is not a sign of being ill. If a dog continues licking itself than a vet visit is in order.

My 3 yr old lab has always been a people licker. I used to refer it as a kiss when she was a puppy and thank her for her kisses. Now whenever the word kiss is used she takes it as a que for a good ole lick. A few weeks ago while I was watching a friends three year old he stumbled and bumped his chin. He came running pointing to his chin for mysterious fix it kiss. I said Aww does a boo needs kissing??? Lumpy my lab promptly nudged his hand away and licked his chin lol. Apparently doggy kisses have the mysterious healing power too lol
