Default Answered: Dog pees when I go to pet him in his bed

Hi All

Have just got a Springer Spaniel pup he is about 5 months old,we got him from a family who had bought him for the children but hes bigger now and not as cuddley as he wasc when he would have been 7 weeks ,which is why they got rid of him. He is nearly house trained,we are getting there in the last week that I have had him and he likes the wife and my two children 16 and 7,he also sits on command and goes to his bed also on command But if I go into the room while hes in his bed and go to pet him he looks very nervous with tail tucked between his legs and he also pees on his bedding This only happens when he is in his basket/bed not when we are out walking or playing in the garden. I was thinking had he been mistreated when in his bed (hit etc) and this may be the reason for peeing himself when I go to his bed to talk or pet him Can anyone help, is it I need to get his trust although as I say hes fine when we outside,he comes everytime hes called Thanks

I think you have hit the nail on the head. Either he has been mistreated in his bed or maybe the man in the previous household was overly harsh towards him.

I think you have to allow him to set the pace, unless absolutely necessary don't approach him in his bed, call him to you instead, with a small treat, don't make eye contact and speak in a higher voice than normal. He'll soon realise that he is being treated lovingly. It won't happen overnight but it will be well worth the effort.
