Default Unanswered: Puppy vomits after worming

Hi, My 8 week old puppy (Molly) has just vomited 4 hours after giving her her first worming powder through her food. This is the first time i have wormed her since I got her. She ate her next scheduled feed as normal, and is now playing as usual.

The worming powder was given to me by the vet, and it is called Panacur. it comes in little sachets, and administered 1/2 a packet through her food, once a day for 3 days.

Is this normal, or can it be something else making her sick, like too much excitement/playing with toys etc?

Thanks for any help. I'm a bit worried.:-(

Vomitting after worming is very common, especially with Panacur. If she seems unwell then you should contact the vet but as long as she is eating/drinking/toileting and playing all should be well.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

I checked online and found that 3 out of 240 dogs vomit with this wormer. No particular info is on the packet, just how to administer. My vet didn't give me any advice or stuff to look out for. If I had known about possible effects, I wouldn't be so concerned. I also think I might contact the breeder and ask what brand she used, and whether that was ok. Best to keep things consistent. Molly seems ok this morning, and kept her breakfast down. She has been quite upset through the night, whining and trying to cuddle in with me. Quite fidgety. She wretched once but nothing came up. (Sorry this is too much information, but I am trying to be as clear as possible)

I know puppies have to be wormed, but I might take some poop into the vets and establish if she HAS got worms, instead of just routinely giving out chemicals for no reason. Is this a good idea?

Bless this forum, its been so very helpful to a new puppy muumy!

Just going to quote from my home vet book: Most young puppies are infested with roundworms. Other worm parasites may also be present, but they're not as common. It is advisable to have your vet check your puppy's stool before deworming for roundworms, because if other worms are present, a broad-spectrum deworming agent may be recommended. (Do you have a good vet!? Maybe you can find a better one?)

Worm medications can be harmful to puppies that are ill from a respiratory infection, chilled, crowded in unsanitary surroundings or abruptly weaned from their mothers. Stressful conditions such as these should be corrected before administering the dewormer. Do not deworm a puppy that has diarrhea unless your vet has determined that the diarrhea is caused by a parasite.--unquote.

I am not sure about whether you may see the worms (in the poo) after the 1st pill but unless someone else with more knowledge says different---Have you checked the poo at all----also is this puppy having diarrhea at all--before and after the pill? (See the info above about diarrhea)

If it were me (and note that I am a cautious person by nature) I would take her to the vet (A GOOD VET) and have her checked for worms. Maybe she is allergic to this med too, you never know! A good vet would/should of given you more info and did he suggest checking her stool to see if she had worms and to see what kind so could use the right med? I am not 100% sure about this but it seems in the back of my mind that you should not just switch right away to a different med for deworming (especially as she is already having problems with this one!)---may make her sicker, etc? Prob. have to wait to get the other med out of her system. I would also ask about probiotic capsules as if she has the diarrhea may need to put the good bacteria back in the gut. For more info on dogs/probiotics--Check on the 'net'/use your browser.

I would do more studying on this, but I have an appointment I have to go to----But you can look up and study this more yourself on the 'net' I hope your puppy is feeling better. If it were me I would not give any more till talking/seeing a vet! Poor little girl!

Hi, thanks for taking the time to look into this. I, of course, will carry on and study more.

I have not administered any more of the prescribed wormer, but have checked with the breeder who said she gave Drontal. I will not be giving Molly anything else until I speak to the vet. This will probably be next week when she is due her 2nd Vaccination, as the situation isn't urgent, judging by her behaviour. She is not sick/have diarrohea, or otherwise unwell. She eats her food and sleeps, and when she is awake, she plays well.

I just feel a bit...well, not cheated, but I feel that the vet should have explained more, checked more. I think also I put too much faith in the vet without asking too many questions. After all....they should know what to do, and I know that puppies need worming, so yeah, I'm going to take what the vet gives me.

Hmm, I sound like a real worrywort, lol

The vet prob. wouldn't think anything about it but cautious me wouldn't like getting the vaccinations and deworming at same time. As far as I'm concerned (no matter what the vet says!) it is putting 'poison' on top of poison--a lot for the little girl to handle at once esp. if she is already having reactions to this worm medicine.

Yes....thats whats worrying me. Its bad enough having to cope with the separation at 7 weeks, whisked away to a new world with strange people, having something nasty jabbed into your neck, then eating chemicals that make you sick because The Big People think you have Teh Nasties in your tummy. Poor baby. Thats a lot of stress in less than two weeks. That alone could cause all manner of sicky behaviour. *sigh*

She seems fine now, and when I checked her poop, I didn't find anything. Just normal poo.

I will get a new vet on Monday morning too. Or at least another one at the same practice.

Meanwhile, I study Nasties in detail.

I wonder how dogs in the wild cope? Or even dogs with irresponsible owners that don't bother with anything
