Unanswered: KC Registration?
Hi, can anyone tell me how long I should expect to wait for KC papers to come from the breeder, so I can register my 9 week old puppy as being ours? I tried reading up on this but still not clear on the procedure.
We collected & paid for our puppy when she was 7 weeks old, and the breeder said she would send off for the papers and forward them on to us. (I'm assuming that was so she could register the litter, but she never said this)
Once I get the papers, then I register the pup as ours, but just wondering how long I have to wait for this first bit to happen. Also....if it never happens, can I register the puppy with KC anyway?
Thanks for any advice

As an AKC breeder, I turn over the papers at the time the pup is picked up unless there is a spay/neuter agreement in which case I keep them until the spay/neuter agreement has been complied with. With full (unlimited registration) the papers go with the pup. I record the litters online with the required fee and usually within 5 to 7 days the registration forms arrive. I am hard pressed to wonder why by the time the pups were 7 weeks the breeder did not already have this done and papers in hand to give you. I would stay on top of it. As for registering with no papers, it is difficult when it comes to the AKC and have to assume the same with the KC. Without sire and dam registration numbers and litter registration number there really is no way.
Another thing to note, Most breed registry clubs put age limits on litters. If the breeder went over this, though the pup is purebred, they may not be able to register the litter. In addition, with the AKC, studs have a limit with regards to the number of litters they can sire then need to be DNA'd. If not done at time of mating, the litter is not recognized.

Here in the UK I think it is only the breeder who can register the pup.
You say you want to register her as yours - do you mean with the KC or for insurances purposes/micro chip etc?

Interesting reply, Yogi...thank you.
The breeder had other matters to deal with such as moving home (which may have influenced her decision to let the pups go at 7 weeks, rather than keep them for the recommended 8 weeks.)
I will send her a text over the weekend, or perhaps ring her. I don't want to seem demanding, but....I want everything done properly and official. Our puppy is a purebred Border Terrier, and we saw her Mother and Aunty, so I don't doubt her integrity. It might be that she just hasn't got around to it yet - but like you pointed out, there could be time limits, or other things....
cigwyllt - I want to register her for everything...insurance, microchip, KC...I still haven't decided if I am going to get her spayed, as she comes from a good bloodline, and I would like to give her the chance to be a mum. (Obviously with careful consideration)
I just want everything to be right and proper, and give her the best life possible.

I am not sure I understand. Why would the breeder be the only person to register the pup when they are the person responsible for registering the litter. With the AKC, the pup registration is the responsibility of the buyer, unless the breeder keeps the pup. If that was the case, a KC breeder would be better off to wait til all are sold then register everything all at the same time ie: litter and pup owners information. I was led to believe from a KC breeder that the process was the same as the AKC. I guess not.

As I understand it (or have been told), the breeder registers the litter under her name, then when she gets the papers through from KC, she sends them to me. I have to then apply for ownership of the individual puppy via the KC, so that the KC has Molly registered as ours.
Is that right cigwyllt....?? lol

That's what the KC website seemed to say. It also said that the pups should be registered as soon as possible so that the paperwork is available for the new owners.
Yogi, are the UK Kennel Club and the AKC run on the same lines?

Even though they are separate with regards to each country ie: CKC Canada, KC United Kingdom and AKC US (Exception being the largest of all breed registries the FCI which consists of 84 countries) if a breed is recognized by one or the other, they can be dual registered. In my breed the Harlequin coloring in the Miniature Pinscher is not permitted in the AKC but in the KC, it is not a banned color. If one was found in the UK and was KC registered and I were to purchase it, I could then by using the KC registration have it dual registered in with the AKC. In the US as in the UK etc. Breed clubs are the ones who actually dictate the majority of what is and is not. People assume that the AKC or KC or whatever does but in fact the breed clubs pass on their rules and standards and the Registries basically post them. Are the two related, no but do work under very similar design. This would have to be to some degree based on the dogs that are being moved from one to the other for breed stock. In the UK the Miniature Pinscher is natural as with the FCI where in the AKC and CKC the standard still calls for a docked tail even though the ear cropping is no longer a requirement. Again, these standards are not set by the AKC, CKC, KC etc. but by the countries breed clubs, as an example. The Prazsky Krysarik only recently came to the US. It dates back to 1058 and is one of the oldest if not the oldest terrier type dog recorded yet it is not recognized by the AKC, CKC or KC. It was only recently petitioned to be added to the FCI. Now that it has, it takes a breed club to be formed, standards set, historical information listed and then petition the Registry for purebred status. This can be a lengthy process with it comes to recognition. The fact is, there are many purebred dogs that we in the AKC, KC and CKC do not have or have ever seen that are in the FCI. These breeds are only now after years and years are starting to make appearances outside their native countries. I think over the next 40 or 50 years, we will see a great deal more breeds being registered than ever. It just takes these countries willingness to let the world know they exist. In the case of the Prazsky Krysarik, it is in fact a Czech breed that for the first several hundred years of its existence were held in high regards by Bohemian nobles and kept in their castles for ratters.
Commonly referred to as the "Prague Ratter", it is by standards the smallest breed of dog currently registered with any purebred registry in the world. Also, it is not related to the Chihuahua or the Miniature Pinscher, though to look at it, you would think so. It in fact pre-dates both breeds.

That's really interesting. From people I talk to there is a great deal of resistance to the UK Kennel Club and they are the ones who are blamed for "ruining" the breeds, never thought of the part that the breed clubs play.
Sorry PersistentPuppy - we seem to have wandered off the point. If you feel that you have waited long enough for the papers why not contact the KC and see what avenues are available to you?

Lol, no don't apologise! I found this all very interesting as well. Thats why we love Borders...they are true to their breed and haven't been "messed around" with.
I think my first point of call is with the breeder, give her a chance, then if nothing after a week, I will contact the KC.
Thanks very much to you both for all your help. I'd be lost without this forum!

I have almost every one of my APBT(american pit bull terriers ) registered with APBR American Pit Bill Registry . It took me apox 5 -8 days to receive the papers once ever thing is said and done from the breeder and the registry . How ever if your wanting something for insurance you dont have to have the animal registered as your to do so . You can also get a chip implanted in the animal from the vet that will register the animal as yours so if its lost or stolen for APOx 50 $ were i live . This is in state and national registry data bases.
