Do you mean like a TV show or do you mean a competitive dog event?
For TV - there are actually professioanl canine actors, however, people can also audition their dogs for specific roles even if they are just house pets. One of my mother's dogs was on Sex and The City. The whole thing happened serendipitously. A friend of mine that I knew from dog agility knew I showed Yorkshire Terriers and that my mother had at least one in coat. There was a casting call for show dogs in the NYC area. She recommended my mother's dog and voila - there we were in Roseland for the shoot. You can get your dog an agent (no I am not joking). The group that got us the role was Dawn Animal Agency:
Dawn Animal Agency Home Page
If you are talking about dog shows in terms of competitive events- I need to ask you a whole bunch of other questions!
First -there are a lot of differnet kinds of dog shows. When people typically talk about "dog shows" they mean conformation dog shows. There are two major organizations in the United States that host conformation dog shows - the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC is the more well-known of the two and sanctions shows such as the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show in Madison Square Garden and the AKC Inviational Dog Show in Long Beach California. American Kennel Club - akc.org and Redirecting... . If this is what you were thinking of in terms of dog shows - well, usually show dogs breed show dogs. If your dog's parents were show dogs, there's a far greater likelihood that your dog has the potential to be one too. Your breeder would know best. So if you bought a dog from a show breeder and the contract gives you the right (yes, i mean the right) to keep your dog intact and show it, you should speak to your breeder and have him/her evaulate your dog to see how it is developing and whether they think it will be able to compete in the ring. Show dogs are judged against a breed standard and even a puppy from champion parents, may not mature to be a good enough physical representative of its breed to earn a championship and be considered a "show dog."
Now, there ARE other kinds of dog shows that do not count at all on a dog's physical appearance. People also refer to agility trials, flyball, weight pull, dock diving, and disc dog events (to name a few!) as "dog shows." However, in many cases, the dog need not even be purebred to compete in these events! Most of these sports have at least one sanctioning organization (UKC and AKC actually sanction events), and many have more than one. Probably the best way to get into a dog sport is to find a dog sport club/dog training school near you that teaches the sport you are interested in. Again ,the internet will help you search out clubs. Joining yahoo groups focused on your specific sport will also put you in a network of people who will be able to point you the right direction.

Being that you are in the UK not the US, check with cigwyllt, She had some information in the past about this if I remember correctly.

yes i am from the UK and there is this major dog show called crufts, which id love my dog to be on there, but as i was looking into it it says to get on to smaller dog shows to be able to get on to it, and to take my dog to training classes which obv he needs with his peeing indoors. how embarressing would that be.
Hes sooo funny atm my boyfriend trying to teach the puppy paw and my 2 year old dog keeps giving him paw lol but hes sitting behind the pup and is stroking the pups head lol its sooo funny watching him, i just want to show him the world!

I've answered but this is probably the best place for you to start looking for shows:
Welcome to The Pug Dog Club - The Official UK Web site

I am assuming that you got your dog from an ethical breeder. What I mean by this is, the breeder has done health/genetic testing on her/his dogs, has contracts and titles her/his dogs and the dogs are registered with the Kennel Club. And the breeder is a member of the Kennel Club and the breed club. If I am assuming right, then this breeder would be your mentor which means you should be working with this breeder. The breeder will guide you on how to show your dog. Giving paw means nothing in the Show world.
Showing takes alot of time. Many dogs take to it and many don't.

I got my dog from my friend who was breeding her pug. But her dogs havent been to any shows and they are KC registered. But im not sure of anything else. When i got my dog i had letter from vets to tell me off all the things that she tested him for when he was a pup so i knew he was 100% healthy. As soon as i saw him i just had to have him i didnt really look into it. But know i just want to show him off to every one! But i do no that on his papers of the ansesters that his grandfather is/was a show dog. Now i think his grandson (my dog) should follow in his footsteps, make me even more proud of what a superb dog he is.

Is your dog KC registered? You won't be able to show him seriously unless he is.

If I remember correctly, and cigwyllt correct me if I am wrong but you need to be invited to Crufts. It is not a show where you can just sign up.
Showing a registered dog is simply up to you. Getting involved in local shows then working up to the larger regional shows and placing well earns the dog points toward CH titles. Whether your dog is great or average, showing is a personal preference though can be expensive. If this is something you want to do and the pup has been KC registered, go for it if that is what you want to do. The KC will tell you the age you can start and generally give you the information that is needed. Good luck.

Yogi is right. I don't remember exactly all the ins and outs but you have to qualify for Crufts. It's not just a huge free for all. My sister in law has come close on occasions but has not made it yet.
If the OP is serious about showing then she should start with the link I posted to the Pug site. The requirements vary from breed to breed - different breeds require different shows to qualify. There are so many breeds and shows out there the only thing to do is to go with your own breed society.
The OP has plenty of time to do the research - the pup is too young for this year's show.

I talked to my son in law about this. He is from the UK and his mother showed their Dane. To qualify for Crufts the dog must have a Best in Show title or qualify at a Championship Show. And there is alot of paperwork that needs to be sent. Kennel name, 3 generation pedigree and so on. These dogs are the best of the best.
pug&boston, what I meant by health/genetic clearences from the parents was that these test clear the parents of health/genetic issues in the breed. THIS is a copy you should have gotten from your "friend". Did you sign any contracts?
Also, you need to know that showing is not easy. It is alot of work. What makes your pup show quality? Did the grandfather obtain a CH Title?
Not to sound rude, but I can't see your friend as an ethical breeder. She doesn't show, belong to the Kennel Club or of the breed club. Sounds like she just bred to bred.
At this age you should be teaching the pup how to "stack"

Sorry you might think im dumb, but whats stack ??
No all i got was KC registration certificate and it has got the name of the parents and there KC name thats it i think :S and a certificate of the 5 generation pedigree, no health stuff :S i was that young and stupid i would of just left with the dog, nothing else!!
How do i get all that information if i dont speak to the people that i got my dog off for a while. :S Do you think its worth doing as i havent got all the stuff?
i have been looking into it now for a while and even getting my dog to ringcraft classes at the end of january 2011. And 1 of the ladys is getting me some more information.
i have saw quite a few videos on you tube at the pugs on crufts and some other dog shows, but i havent saw 1 like my dog i probs looking at wrong videos but there all fawns and rej is apricot i think he really good looking ( obv any1 going to say that bout there own dog) i think hes really clever, but he has let him self down a bit since we've had the pup. which hasnt helped and has put me off a little. even if i dont win any show, it will be just nice to show rej off.

It's to do with how your dog stands. I didn't know until I googled it

Only to fun shows run by local doggy organisations - ones with classes for the dog with the waggiest tail and things like that. There were people there who were taking it all terribly seriously but we just enter for a laugh. They are not serious shows at all - you might win overall but it means nothing so far as qualification for any other show is concerned.

i was just reading something on a website 'how to train your dog for a show' and 1 of the points it says on there is that if the dog is neautured or spayed can not compete :s but if this is bad for your dog if you dont breed them, how would u come around that ??
his dominance is REALLY REALLY bad aparently i had a dog sycologist as a next door neighbour and he was telling me that Rej thinks hes the man of the house and that we need to be more firm with him. which we have been and he has got better. But he recommended to us that we need to get him neautured to make him not as dominant in and around the house.
Even last night we went round to my boyfriends parents house and they have a male Yorkie called teejay, we took the dogs with us as we always do, but the 1st time yday, i was on the sofa with teejay then after teejay jumped down rej come up and was sniffing for agess, i turned my head and he must of had a pee of the sofa, i was soooo shocked hes never done that before in some one elses house. so i do need something doing about his dominance as i cant be cleaning up wee all the time.
But i really want to show him off i dont know what to do now
