Answered: Oh Akita Owners..I have a Question for ya!
When exactly do Akita's start acting aloof with strangers? I've been patiently waiting & I'm seriously doubting Kuma understands what 'breed standard' means. And please no, "not all dogs follow breed standard" on this one. It was a quality I was soo looking forward to...

Kato was about 8 months old when he first started showing signs of his aloofness and stranger awareness. Prior to this he would meet and greet everyone like any other pup, no caution, no aloofness.
Katos moment arose one camping trip when some drunk idiots came into our camp site, and he noticed our reaction to them was not so welcoming..........it was the first time ever we heard him bark that day.....once he worked out these drunken idiots were not welcome, he barked and marched them out of our camp site, and it was from this point on that he became aloof, watchfull and protective.

As Nattie said it's usually 8 months to a year....Seigi will be 10 months on the first and his aloofness started kicking in about a month ago along with his being territorial and on in guard mode when he should be....he was the same way as Kuma a few months back...loved everybody and anybody!....Now he picks and chooses who he bothers with and for the most part he'll associate with women he sees ocassionly but he really wants nothing to do with men he doesn't know and so far he's still hanging on to his love for little kids but is losing his fondness for the older ones...Don't worry Kuma's aloofness will kick in sooner or later...They all do!

THANK YOU!! It gives me hope! Mayb one day it will just click for her like it did for Seigi & Kato.
She's still being overly submissive when we're out & someone shows her attention. Still peeing & wriggling at their feet when she meets new people. I'm thankful she is more on guard here at home. Her whole character changes when someone's at the door & she gives out those rare kita barks.
(I wish I could give points to you both! )

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
