short haired single coat dogs often have dry skin issues with winter cold. Adding fish oil tablets to the food helps also, these dogs should not be bathed but once every 3 to 4 months. Over bathing is a common cause for dry skin in dogs.

i have a chihuahua. She is also black and gets dry in the winter due to the heat in our house. My vet ok'd me to use a couple drops of olive oil on her skin. It works great and as a bonus my hands arent dry any more LOL

hah! yeah i wouldnt quite coat the doggies in olive oil, literally just a couple of drops between my hands and then rub down to the skin. 2 drops is all it takes to moisturize my pup. wouldnt want them slip sliding all over the place or messing up the upholstery on the couch!

Dry Skin Relief
Dogs can experience dry skin for a myriad of reasons. While there are many shampoos and salves out there to treat the skin from the outside, I believe the best treatment is from the inside-out. Many dog foods are cooked at high temperatures and thus the potency of their ingredients are reduced dramatically. Try introducing a supplement that has either not been cooked or is cooked at low temperatures. Some important ingredients to look for are essential fatty acids (ideally from fish oil), and lecithin. I give my dog the IN Diet Supplements but I think there are many options out there. Again, the important thing is that whatever you give your dog has not been scorched to the point where the ingredients are no longer viable. Just because something is listed on a label does not mean it is going to work.

There is no scientific evidence that clearly demonstrates that putting vinegar in drinking water will assist a dog with a dry skin. Addressing the issue of dry skin in a dog is a multifactorial issue and there can be many causes for this. It would be wise to consult a veterinary professional who could ascertain whether or not there are any medical conditions or other issues that may be predisposing your dog to dry skin. It is also important to ensure that your dog is recieving premium quality nutrition, with adequate protein and essential fatty acids to maintain skin and coat health. The frequency, type and technique you use to shampoo your pet can also impact on skin health.

my cockapoo (spaniel cross poodle) has skin issues, which means that we need to wash him with medicated shampoo every week or so.
this would normally deplete the skin and coat of oil, but he is fine, if it did we might use a conditioner after the shampoo.
if you can feed your dog dog pellets with fish in it that can help, some people also feed oil seperately in a dogs meal at night time.
I am a strong believer in feeding your dog mainly meat, and so far the fat in red and white meat seems to keep our guys coat and skin in good condition.
