Default Unanswered: My 4 year old Pomeranian Is Only Peeing Once a day.. Normal?

Hey all... I have had a Llasah Apso for a few years now so I THOUGHT i was familiar with smaller breeds. A couple weeks ago a friend of mine who will be traveling for work asked me if I could keep her Female Pom. She is about 4 years old and apparently she is used to being walked twice per day. She used to have an accident between walks at times. The only bad thing was that she was on a lower brand dog food. I switched her to Blue buffalo dog food and she actually adores it.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM. I have her in her crate all night long and when morning comes I take her out.. usually see's if she wants to pee... I take her outside and she is not in any way interested in the conversation. She isnt sniffing around.. she isnt showing any signs of having to pee. After 15 minutes or so I take her back inside and feed her and give her water. I usually try to take her back outside about 15 minutes after she is done. SHE USUALLY IS STILL not interested. Now I have been doing this everyday for over a week. Sometimes I even take her for long walks. She walks and looks at me.. tries to play with me etc but peeing? NADA!

At this point I keep taking her back outside maybe every half hour to hour as I simply cannot give her free reign of the house until its established that she has pee'd. Here is where its crazy for me. I keep saying "If she isnt peeing outside she HAS to be peeing inside. But she only has access to one small room during these times and I never ever see pee on the floor nor do i smell any. When she first came into my home she seemed to mark and i clearly saw that but I keep wondering if she is peeing and its drying up and I just dont see it.

After taking her outside MANY MANY times there will come a time that i sit her down in the grass and she IMMEDIATELY goes to pee. So she clearly knows HOW to pee outside.

Here is my question. Am I wasting my time taking her out in the morning. And again before bed. I took her out again tonight before typing this and I took her out 3 times.. a total of an hours worth of time and NOTHING! I feel terrible putting her in her crate but I i simply do not know what to do.

Has anyone ever had a pom that simply did not pee more than once per day .. and poops like every 2 days? I dont see her drinking much water but she has access to water all day long. I never remover her water until an hour or so before bed. She doesnt seem stressed.. when she pee's it just comes right out. She never runs around as tho she is trying to pee but cant.. usually when i take her out she just runs and tries to play with me (i never play back outside) but there is NO sniffing around until the time that she actually does pee.. then she sniffs and just goes. Ok ive typed a lot. Any help would be apprecaited.

Thanks

Smile Welcome to the forum!

I just did some searching on the net and was surprised at how many sites there are on this subject. Here is one link: Infrequent urination?
If you put these words in your browser: dog only pees once a day--You can read a lot more sites.

Not sure I understand--Did your friend give you this dog for keeps or are you just babysitting for a few days?

How much food does she eat and it doesn't sound like she drinks much water. I would try to get more liquid in her. Putting a little vinegar in her water will make her thirstier---Just so she doesn't stop drinking altogether because of the vinegar! (My dogs get a little vinegar in their food once a day, but I feed raw as well as some home-cooked so easy to mix in their food. I don't think it would be wise to put it in regular dog food--mine weigh around 40# and they only get about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon a day. Bragg Organic Raw~Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) is the healthiest vinegar---May be hard to find--I was lucky to find it at my local Piggly Wiggly grocery store. It comes in a glass 16 oz. bottle at about $3.50. (Check on the net--Bragg Live Foods, Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, Bragg Liquid Aminos,Systemic Enzymes, Bragg Live Organic Food Products, Patricia Bragg, Paul Bragg, Bragg Organic Olive Oil, Bragg Salad Dressings, Bragg Seasonings, Bragg Health Products ) It is a lot more expensive then regular vinegars but worth it and you don't use much at a time. Very healthy for the dog--other non-organic vinegars are not!

If this is your dog now--maybe a trip to the vet and some blood work would be a good idea. It doesn't seem to me that not peeing or pooping more then that is very healthy--no matter the answers off the net!!

Keep in touch!

Thank you so much for the reply.. I could not find the right words to put in the search. Everything i put in brought back responses from owners who's dogs are pooping EVERYWHERE. and i have the exact opposite problem.

I feed her once per day a very high quality food.

She will be with me for about a year. So she will be here for a while. The dog has a regular vet plan and is there a lot but I could take her back in for a greater check up. I was wondering if maybe this is just part of being in a new place. I dont see her drinking water a lot however its always there for her. I will look over this new info. Thank you very much.
