Default Unanswered: Proin

This may be the wrong place....I'm having trouble figuring out this website. But I have a question. After Proin (for incontinence) almost killed our Husky, I have learned of three other natural products: Leaks No More (Homeopet), Senior Bladder Support (NaturVet), and Vet's Best Active Female Support (Green Dog Naturals). Is there anyone who has used one or more of these who could give me an opinion about them?

Look in the search section under the word Proin...This has already been addressed and there are lengthy discussions on this subject already on here.

The best advice I can give you is to add cornstarch to their food. It takes a couple of weeks to become effective. Do NOT ever give a dog Proin. That is lethal stuff. The amount of cornstarch depends on the dog's weight but I've never heard of a dog who couldn't tolerate it. In the interim I suggest doggie diapers and trying to find the underlying problem.

Default reply to FionaLeigh about safe alternatives to Proin...

Thank you for the suggestions. I would try cornstarch if I could find a way to get her to eat it. Since she only eats dry dog food (stomach upsets with other food since 'puppyhood'), I'm not sure what I could mix it with. I think the underlying problem is merely that she is a 14-year-old spayed female who never had this problem until recently in her 'old age.' Doggie diapers? Not really feasible with her size and coat (and with her personality, I'm sure she would take them off). But, thank you! Your suggestions are really good ones!

Some ideas on how to get her to take the cornstarch---(maybe will not upset her stomach?--Have you tried since puppyhood and maybe some of this would not bother her now!?)--Mix with some low-sodium beef broth---Could even put it on top of her dry dog food as like a gravy. It would be best to make your own beef broth/liquid as would have no salt added---Just boil a piece of beef (Try to cut off any fat) in enough water to get some beef flavored liquid--Do enough at a time for several 'sessions.' She might be able to handle eating some of the beef too---just start out slowly. You could try this with boiling some skinless chicken breasts---same way as stated for the beef.

If she can handle cooked oatmeal---You can try adding the cornstarch to that after it has cooled down--Make the oatmeal on the 'runny side' so it will not be too dry and sticky thick after adding the cornstarch. And cook it a little longer too so it is more digestible. If she can handle the oatmeal--wonder if adding a raw egg to the hot cooked oatmeal as soon as you turn off the heat--Stir the egg in right away and it will cook the egg white--Just keep stirring till it mixes well.

Going further---Boil some ground beef---Put in strainer and rinse the fat out somewhat. You could add this to some well cooked/boiled rice---leave enough liquid to absorb the cornstarch. Feed as is or mix with your dog food.

I have no idea about whether you should cool the food down before adding the cornstarch--whether this affects the results you want from the cornstarch--So someone who has used this idea will have to tell you!

If this does not bother your dog's tummy-- I bet she will really love the human food. I feed raw and home cooked. You have to do a switch gradually--like half dog food and half human till the dog gets used to the change.
And here is a good thread to read--long but worth reading!-->

Foods that are hazardous to a dog

I'm curious how the cornstarch is working out. I have a full size collie and have taken her off of Proin as well. I have been giving her 1/2 soy milk daily and 3/4 fennel "tea". She loves the milk and I put the tea over her dry food. BUT after 3 weeks of thinking all is well...she started having accidents today. Now I am going to up the dosages to 3/4 soy milk and 1 cup fennel tea to see if that helps but open to any other suggestions.
