I have a 4 year old Bichon. We got Bo when he was about 6 weeks old. He tends to obsess with certain toys. First it was a Frisbee then a plastic stick and now a red rubber Kong ball. He barely ever lets it out of his sight. He plays what looks like soccer where he uses his front paws to move it and play. He will put the ball down and freeze into a forward looking position waiting for it to be thrown. When ever we do throw it he brings it back but drops it about 10 feet from us then turns around and freezes. If we don't get up and get the ball he will pick it up and drop it a few more towards us. When he plays this "soccer Game" it seems like he has is suffering a great deal of stress. When on the pool deck he always plays soccer and it always ends up in the pool. He paces and paces with this crazed look on his face. He will not go out of the house unless he has the ball in his mouth. He is a super great dog but this obsession is very annoying to us and guests. Yesterday in 2 hours he threw the ball in the pool 8 times. It is very frustrating to both us and I am sure very stressful for Bo. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You
I wish I knew how to help this! But you're not alone. My boyfriend has a 14 year old australian shepherd and she has a frisbee obsession. She is absolutely crazy about it just like your dog. if people are in the pool she runs around it and drops it in the pool because she knows people will fish it out because otherwise she falls in after it. So she leaves us no choice! We generally keep telling her to go lay down. But she still is persistent. Let me know if anyone has any tips!
I just decided to take the ball away and hide it. I was given some advise to do that for 3 months and try again. Unfortunately I also have a younger Bichon that has a red ball and is not even closed to obsessed with he. He just plays with it every once in a while. So now Bo tries to take his at times. But he does seem a lot less stressed and so are we. I will keep you posted. Thanks, Norman
