Question Unanswered: Best way to train dog to stop jumping on people.

My 4 month old Jack Russel/Beagle mix (Plankton) always gets excited and jumps on people when they come in the door and sometimes when they've been here for a while if they're someone he really likes. Adults have no issues with this as he's small, but children get really upset. We're also expecting a new baby in September and we babysat a four month old a few days ago and he jumped up on her while I was holding her, licked her face, and nibbled her toes. Yeah, it's cute, but unacceptable. I've been trying different things to get him to stop but none seem to work. I know I need to pick one way and stick to it every time, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me?

Default One trick

at puppy school we taught our dogs not to jump on adults or children by walking them around a pet store with other people/dogs and asking adults and children if they would have your dog sit before they pet them/give them treats. If the dog gets too excited they turn away and ignore them. When the dog sits they pet them or give them a treat. You can make sure to tell anyone coming into your house to have them sit before they give it any attention. It works ( i have a WILD dog and he is big too!) if you are consistent and everyone helps out with this training! Good luck!

I did almost the exact same thing with my 80 lb lab. She always jumped on people so anyone who came in the house we would have them ignore her and turn their backs if she jumped. So then we would make her sit before anyone gave her any attention. Eventually she caught on that with sitting she got a lot of petting and treats so now anytime she sees someone coming up she sits down at the front door and waits. It's so cute!

"Best way to train dog to stop jumping on people."

Tell `em to stop poking it with a stick.

I like clicker training, personally. There are some great videos on youtube on how to do it. FYI, you have to have really good treats for this to work. My dog won't cooperate unless it's one of his favorite treats.

If you put in Kikopup and jumping in a search on youtube, you'll get a video on stopping jumping. She has a lot of great videos on other things, too! I was finally able to get my dog to walk on a loose leash by using her method.

Hi,

I had similar issues with a rescue spaniel and i was advised to completely ignore the dog when walking into a room to the extent of not even speaking or eye contact, it soon got the message it wasn't centre of attention then as mentioned earlier introduce a reward for sitting.

I staged this a few times with other people just to keep variety and it really did work not overnight but all was good.
