Default Unanswered: Excessive barking

I have a Shih Tzu that is barking at EVERY little sound outside. Car going by, people outside, the wind, whatever. Sometimes I can't even figure out what he heard. He's been barking off and on for the past three hours. I've heard that yelling at them can actually encourage it, so I've been doing my best to ignore it and give him treats when he's quiet. I had to quit treating him, though, because I don't want him throwing up next....

Any other suggestions on how to solve this problem?

The two most common distractions for his is a small metal can like an old coffee can with loose change in it. Give it a shake and see if this distracts him from barking. The other and my personal preference, a spray bottle. If he barks, squirt him and say no. I have used this for years with my menagerie from cats to dogs and even my birds and it works. Just be consistent and use a stern NO when doing it. At this point, it is worth a try.
