Default Unanswered: Dog refuses to walk. Why?

I have a 9 year old German Shepherd. I've had him since he was a little puppy and he used to go for walks, but never that long of a walk, he would always turn back. My life got hectic and I didn't walk him regularly for a little bit and now that I'm trying to get him back into the routine, he refuses to walk.

He gets a bit excited when I want to take him out (and get upset when we leave him at home to walk the other dog - since I walk one at a time), but he will walk past 4 houses, then look back at the house and just sit down. I know he is not tired, there is no way he can be tired because if he sees my brother he gets up and goes towards him with no problem. I also bring water with me, but he never wants to drink. I have no idea what to do to get him back into the habit of walking. Why doesn't he like it anymore?

Help?

Smile Welcome to the forum!

Can you try walking them both at once?! Curious to see how he would react to that. You can get a 'thingy'-Lol, sorry can't think what to call it--a link to have both dogs together while walking them. Help somebody--Explain better then I am!

I would, but I'm just a weak 20 year old female, they are far too large and strong for me to walk them both at the same time. I am afraid that something will excite them and they will run after it and I won't be able to hold them >.<

Okay--so your dog is a senior now. Does he act like he may have some stiff joints/arthritis?

Another thing to try getting your 2 dogs walking at same time---How old is your brother--Can he take one dog and you the other--At least for a one time thing to see how your dog reacts? Or do you have a friend or relative who could walk one of them with you if your brother is too young?

He seems to be about the same as he's always been. I tried to research what dogs with arthritis move like and he doesn't move like that. But he might just be getting old...I doubt its fatigue though because as soon as he sees the house he runs for it.

I think I'll have to try this. Its just more inconvenient for me, but it may be my only option. Thank you so much for your help
