Unanswered: Is this mating valid?
I have a maltese bitch in season and on the 8th and 9th day of her cycle she was mated with a good tie and now on the 12th day she is showing the usual signs of being truly ready, tail dropping over, standing etc but the dog is a long way away and I can't get her there again to make sure she is in pup. She has whelped successfully before and I don't know if this mating will be successful. Help!

Seriously? A reputable breeder would have known such a thing before even attempting to mate their dog. There are 3 malteses at our local shelter. The breeder couldn't find homes for them because because a lot of people are out of work and can't afford the pets they have, so they were just dropped off. If they do not find homes, they will be put to sleep. Why would you want to breed more dogs that people right now can't afford?

Oh dear...
Hi, an unhelpful response from 'the great font of all knowledge and wisdom' that clearly knows more about and loves dogs more than anyone else. Interestingly, I could have sold the last 4 pups 20 times over, people were fighting over them. Maybe you should move to a more affluent area where people are more than prepared to pay the £1,650 they paid for each one of my pups. I am vaguely aware that there is abuse of animals in some rough areas of the UK, but have never actually seen it and would rather you kept it to yourself thank you and answered my simply question. If you can't give a constructive reply then please don't bother, go fondle your own dogs ears, and for gods sake please spend your time rescuing those dogs. I am not a breeder...me and my bitch do it for fun!

Bunny I'm not sure if your last statement was a true one or simply sarcasm so let me say this..We do not support backyard breeders and this is not meant to say that you are..Many of us here are or were responsible and ethical breeders so when someone comes to the forum asking a question that an experienced breeder should know the answer to we suspect that they are not experienced or responsible breeders..Those of us here who have or do breed spent one to two years being mentored by another ethical breeder of our particular breed. Therefore we are well educated on the breeding process not just in our knowledge but hands on experience as well...
We also will not share our knowledge or answer questions to someone who is breeding when they've given us no reason to believe they're doing it responsibly...Has the proper genetic testing been done? Are both the dogs AKC registered and within the breed standard? Have they been shown or titled? Is the female at least 2yr.s old but less then 5yr.s old? Do you have a minimum of $2,000 put away for an emergency c-section? Do you have homes lined up for all of the puppies? Has it been at least 1yr. since her last breeding? Do you sell them with a spay/neuter contract and agree to take the puppy back at any age for any reason so it doesn't wind up in a shelter? Do you screen prospective owners and do a home check? What do you feed the mother during and after her pregnancy?
These are some of the things required to breed ethically and responsibly..We do not support breeding for profit as when it's done with the steps I've listed there is no profit to be made..Breeding is done for the betterment of the breed and to produce puppies that are within the breed standard as well a being free of any genetic health issues the breed is prone to and to have the correct temperment..If most or all of these things are not being done then the person has no buisness breeding..To many puppies and dogs are euthanized every year for people to not be doing the things required to breed healthy puppies and having homes for them before the breeding ever takes place.

Who are 'we' exactly? I asked a simple question and fortunately I got a simple answer from someone who is not weird about animals. And yes, doggie is up the duff and before you pop onto your soap box again...and in answer to your crusade like questions...none of your business! Think you maybe need to get a little perspective hunny. Toodle pip.

I hadn't realised that you were in the UK. Sadly the abuse of dogs is not confined to the "rougher" areas of our country (areas with which, from the tone of your language, you must be familiar.)
Just look at the rescue websites in your area and see the number of pure bred dogs abandoned/rescued/given up that are looking for homes. These are dogs that would cost well in excess of £ 1 000 yet they are no longer wanted. Price is no guarantee that a dog will have a good home.

Bunny, you obviously do not care at all about animals and are in it solely for the money. In other words, you suck. What the others had to say in response to you was more than logical and you know it. Please do your dogs a huge favor and find them new, better homes and go get yourself a goldfish.

Why do those who don't know what they're doing insist on breeding? Aren't there enough beautiful dogs being killed for a want of a good home?

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't even trust this sub-human with a goldfish.
