Default Unanswered: My dog won't stay home!

Benji is a 45 lb look alike of the movie Benji. He has been with us for 7 years. He has 1/2 acre of fenced in yard and two playmates. He learned to jump the fence four years ago. I very reluctantly installed a shock collar system but he doesn't care. It is on the highest shock setting and set for a seven second shock. He insists shock is worth it to run the woods and fields around our area. If I tie him up he will die of boredom. I know he will eventually be hit by a car or "offed" by a neighbor. I think my only choice is to find him a farm where he can roam, but that seems iffy as well.

Any suggestions?

Is he an outdoor only doggie? Can you put a hotwire around the top of your fence?

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

My Husky Nina was always jumping the fence..I finally went and got her a tie out that was about 7ft long..It gave her plenty of length to run the yard but it was about 2ft shy of the fence on all ends..She did just fine with it since she had enough length to run the yard.

Your dog so unqiue and wild , there few options you can do:
You can hire private trainer for dogs, who will teach your dog, to do right beahvior, also teach your dog to listen to you.

The last choice, not good idea. try first one.

Hi bethdosser ans welcome to the forum:
I have more questions than answers to your problem, so maybe you could answer these to help clarify the problem.
1) Is Benji actually jumping over the fence, or is he climbing up onto something and then over?
2) Is the fence a chain link or wooden fence and how high is it?
3) Does Benji come back on is own, or do you have to go out and bring him back reluctantly?
4) What other form of physical activity does he get daily and for how long?
5) Most importantly, is he being aggressive to anyone or anything while he is out?
I'm not a big fan of the shock collar, as the name states, it sends a shock of electricity throughout the body, to which I feel will have effect on the heart over time.
My first dog was a BorderCollie/Shepherd, and if it wasn't for the 5 foot wooden fence around our backyard, she would have been gone as well.
Heaven forbid you were to open the front door and something/anything catch her eye because she'd be gone.
I really hope this problem will get fixed
All the best.

What do you mean by staying home? Staying in the house? or staying within the backyard?

If you want your dog to stay at home, you must first establish yourself as the Pack Leader of the House. That means that you should become a leader. Not a dog lover. A dog lover smudges their pet dog with affection.

A Pack Leader gives affection when a dog does the right thing.

Next, do an everyday training. Set boundaries. Go to the place where you don't want to your dog to pass.

Whenever he tries to go out, block the entrance. Both of you are going to battle each other's will.

Be as stubborn as a spoiled child. Don't give in to what your dog wants to do; and that's to go out.
