Answered: eye ulcer..opinions please
I have a female, 8 yr old Miniature Pinscher, Littlebit. Anytime she becomes afraid (stormy weather) or ill, her eyes will get a bluish haze to them, her eyes are golden brown. 3 weeks ago her right eye began to drain, the blue haze is there and the white under her lids have gotten terribly red. No swelling or pus, just a watery drain. For a week I tried tending it at home, it got no better so I took her to the vet. He said she had an ulcer but the good news, it was small. He prescribed Neocidin Ointment 3 times a day, A week later I took her back to him. He prescribed Atropine Sulfate Ointment and Ofloxicin Solution 3 times a day. It's now a week later and still no change. I'll give it another day or two but I know we'll be seeing the vet again. Anyone else had any problems similiar to this?

I have a copy of a very good/classic Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook by James M. Giffin, Md and Liisa Carlson, D.V.M.--and yes the names are spelled correctly!! There have been many newer additions then mine--I tell you this as I wish every dog owner had this book. It is available through Amazon and possibly Ebay at used book prices--It is a costly book new. And maybe you could get it from your library---They could 'hunt it up' from other libraries (if they don't have it on hand) and have it brought to your library for you to check out. I am talking about this very good book for every member in here. Once you see it--You will prob. want a copy of your own!!
I did find the chapter on eyes and here is the link: Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook - Debra Eldredge, Liisa D. Carlson, DVM, Delbert G. Carlson, James M. Giffin - Google Books This is a very long chapter and be sure to finish it as the bottom topic is prob. what you want the most. After reading my book about the chapter on eyes---I am wondering if you need a 2nd opinion as you are not seeing results and maybe this is one of the other problems that the eye can have. Please be sure to read all the problems thoroughly and you will see what I mean. Hope this is useful to you. I have a Cocker that has very dry eyes and I have to put eye drops in his eyes 4 times a day. After reading the chapter on eyes--I can't believe how many dif. problems there can be!! Good luck!
Came back in here to tell you that the chapter on eyes is about half-way down that page you clicked on above! But it is all worth reading--Lol, just grab a cup of coffee and read.

Sorry mythreedawgs:
I don't have any experience in this, but wanted to wish all the best with Littlebit.
If this is a breed related thing, then there are some Min Pin owners here that may be able to help.
All the best and big hugs to Littlebit.

Thank you Corky, that chapter covered a lot of eye problems. I think my vet maybe guessing at the problem. The only test he did was to put a dye in her eye which showed the ulcer. On the second visit he said it was smaller but there's no change in her symptoms and the eye looks the same to me. I'll give him one more chance before getting a second opinion. He's always been a very good doctor with all my furbabies..he saved Littlebit after a rattle snake bit to the side of her head. I've been thru a lot with this little girl and I don't want her to lose the sight in her eye. Thanks for the info.
Thanks Dogsrule. Does anyone know if Yogi is still around on this site? I met him on another site years ago and he mentioned this site to me. I've lost contact for awhile.

I'm so very shocked! I had no idea that Yogi was gone! He was such a very special person. He and I exchanged emails for yrs. The morning that I had to leave Little bit at the vet for spaying, I was a wreck. He spent the entire day on chat with me. When she was bitten by the rattler, he was right there to reassure me and here I was again looking for him and he's GONE! We were on the Zuessdog house forum together for years. I have 3 miniature pinschers and we shared the love of these little pins and I'm sure I don't have to say..he had so much knowledge about dogs. I trusted him more than a vet to give me answers..I just can't believe it. I often teased him about all the pets he had..seems evertime we talked, he'd added a new addition..or two. He sure loved his furbuddies. Can you tell me about his pets Corky? Were they adopted?

I don't have time right now to go in to all the detail I want so I am just checking in with you for now to let you know that I will be back --hopefully in the next 24-36 hrs. The forum you mentioned--Zuessdog forum--The administrator there knows some and you might email him--also a Becky that is on that forum (and I am not sure of her username there has adopted 3 of his dogs--She knew Yogi quite well too.--If you go on that forum--I'm sure you can find her there. Her email address I will send you in a private message here or email if you gave that as a way of contact on your home/profile page in here She knows prob. as much as I do.
I have to run now as I am expecting my daughter to be here soon and we are going away for the day. Talk to you later. You can send me an email via a way of contact on my profile page if you have questions, etc. Will just give you Becky's email address now in that private message right now.

One time one of my Sugar Gliders got an eye ulcer, and the K-State Vets took some horse blood and spun out the red blood cells and ended up with this yellow syrum... we used it as an eye drop for a few weeks, and it cleared up. Not sure what they called it, or if it would work with a dog... but I thought it was pretty interesting.

Thanks for the input Haylee, I agree, that is interesting. Will be taking Littlebit back to the vet tomarrow. Her eye is no better with these meds and I'm afraid the vision in that eye is going too. I'll keep everyone informed.

Back to the vet today, He put a dye in Littlebit's eye and showed me with a light. There's scarring from the ulcer but the ulcer itself is getting smaller. He said it's just going to take some time and she has not lost the vision in the eye. All good news..I was really worried.

This is good news.
We can all relate to the worried feeling when our fur babies aren't just right.
All the best.

One of my dogs has had irritations in the one eye that unfortunately has caused more than one ulcer. The treatment you were given was the same as mine. Now the ulcer is gone, I rinse her eyes with saline solution after each bath and if she rubs her eye. I have not had any problems since I began the saline rinses, which has just become part of her grooming regime.

Update on Littebit..4th visit to the vet today. It seems that the ulcer in her eye stopped healing and has gotten no better since my last post. Next Wednesday she will be going back for surgery. The vet said we will have to make it worse before we can get it better. He will remove the scar tissue and tack the third eye lid. His first choice was sending her to a specialist to insert a lens..I can't afford that. I wish I could but it's not possible at this time and I trust my vet. He has treated all my animals for years and I've never been disappointed with his treatment. Will keep you informed of her progress.

Thank you for the update! Hope things go well!
On another note--Have you noticed that some of your posts are prob. missing? Some work was being done in this forum in the past day and it appears that all the posts done the past 3 weeks have 'disappeared.' It was prob. a necessary thing in order to keep the forum from having major problems---I can't tell you exactly any details but this has happened one other time too a while back. I just wanted you to know as you are fairly new in here and you may not have these posts anymore if they were done in the past 3 weeks. In checking this thread out just now I see you did post some 3 weeks ago so some of your posts are still here.
