Question Unanswered: Scarlett (4 mo old dachshund) shivers after she eats..

It's pretty self explanatory, when my puppy Scarlett eats her food after she's finished eating, she comes over to me comes up onto the couch lays down on my legs and shivers amazingly. At first I thought she was just cold, so i closed the windows and turned the heaters on, and while it is now warm in the apartment she's still doing it. I know shivering can be a sign for when a dog is scared, but what can she be scared about? Or, is it possibly something I am missing?

This is going to sound stupid BUT - my son used to that!!!! I may be remembering it wrong but I seem to rememer the doctor saying it was to do with the blood being diverted from his skin to his stomach. My son grew out of it. Some dogs do shiver a lot more than others and dachshunds are one of those that are particularly prone to it.

Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read!

I do that too! It's because my blood sugar is rising and it makes me shiver. Sometimes my teeth chatter. It's really embarrassing at a restaurant. You can take your dog to the vet and see if it has problems with it's blood sugar. If not, then it's not anything to worry about.

Just guessing here but could there be an ingredient in the food causing a drastic spike in her blood sugar level? Have you tried a different brand of food?

I've got a vet appointment already set up for Wednesday, and no i haven't, we strictly use science diet with boiled chicken because it's the only food that we've found that doesn't cause my other two dachshunds hair loss problems.

Check into foods with a low Glycemic index, meaning there's very little spike in the blood sugar levels.

Science diet has low grade carbs in it, so, like sugar, it spikes the blood sugar then drops it fast, and that's what your dog is going through right now.

Amicus Dog Food | Review and Rating

This is one of the foods I feed (I feed 5 or 6 different types of food, something different every meal, but one food I'd NEVER feed, is Science Diet!!! Awful stuff! And horrible expensive for what it is!!! Read the review, you'll throw it out!
