Unanswered: What kind of dog is this?
My daughter wants this dog. I can't determine what kind of dog it is - so perhaps it is a mix. A terrier certainly, coloring of an airdale or welsh terrier but shaped more like an irish terrier or wire fox terrier. Or maybe it's a puppy. I'm stumped!

Please, please, please do NOT allow your daughter to choose a dog on the basis of its looks. It is a recipe for disaster.
What sort of dog are you able to care for? It is no good having a one man type breed if you want the dog to be part of the whole family. No good having an active busy breed if you plan to leave him alone all day.
To me the dog looks like a daschund - not an easy dog and certainly not a dog for someone is unprepared for the stubborn nature of this breed.

And please don't get a puppy for your daughter for Christmas unless YOU plan on caring for it. 70% of the puppies people get for other for Christmas end up euthanized in shelters a few months later. Shelter worker hate February because they have to euthanize all of the unwanted puppies that were Christmas presents. Getting a child a dog of their own is a mistake anyway. They end up not taking care of the dog and then the parents just "get rid of it". I hate that term.

I appreciate your concerns and your passion for caring for dogs and their well-being. That said, I am an educated, responsible adult who has had animals my entire life, typically from SPCA's or rescue. I know how to care for dogs, how to research an appropriate breed for my circumstance. I cannot, however, research this dog until I know what it is. I ask that future posts stop judging and lecturing without all the relevant facts. I appreciate any response that addresses my question - the breed of the dog.

I'm sorry if you were offended - I am sure you will understand that on a forum such as this there are many, many posts from wannabe dog owners who assume that all dogs are the same and it is just a question of choosing one that you like the look of.
I would say that the dog in the picture is either a wire haired dachshund or a schnauzer.

You would understand my concern if you ever knew how many people treat their pets like disposable objects. Especially those people who give them as gifts for Christmas. I am not judging you. I am letting you know (and anyone else who asks the same question with no background info) that if you are getting a dog for your child for Christmas, then generally it is a bad idea and not a good reason to get a dog. If you don't want people to explain things like that to you, then you need to explain things better yourself. We do get defensive when people come on here wanting a dog because they think it's cute and then have to "get rid of it" because they didn't bother to research past it's looks.
The dog you see in the pic is a terrier, although it is an unusual looking one and is probably not a purebred. It looks like an Airedale terrier/schnauzer mix. Since we know nothing about the dog other than it looks like a terrier, I would research the top 5 terriers that looks the most like it. And I would try to be nicer to the people that are trying to help you. You came here asking questions. We try to give as much information as possible and some there are some information people need to hear even if they don't want to hear it. Our first priority here is dogs and making sure that anyone who comes here asking any type of question about dogs is given the best possible answers for the sake of the dog. This is a dog forum. It is not a social services forum nor is it a politically correct forum. Our first concerns here are about dogs welfare. Humans and their feelings come last. If your feelings got hurt, it was not intended. This has nothing to do with anyone's feelings but your prospective dog.

I would say Schnauzer, with ears natural ( not cropped) I grew up with Schnauzers, my parents still have Schnauzers, and the first dog I got when my boys were very young was a Schnauzer. They have all been fun, and good dogs. They will need to be groomed monthly, and look at their health problems they can have. Good trainning, and maybe even getting your daughter in 4-H with the dog will help her enjoy and learn and be able to do fun things with the dog. We loved all our Schnauzers as our family dog.
