Default Unanswered: Bad Luck with Injuries

Hi Everyone,

I am please asking for some feedback, suggestions, advise or comments on my dog Benny.

Benny has just turned 1 in November, he is a Border Collie x Kelpie (short hair) and the best natured, well obident dog.

He loves to chase balls... However in October my
Partner was throwing his kong for him when he jumped for the ball and came
Landing down with a huge crack and layer on the ground.

We rushed him to the vet (after hours) for emergency xrays. Orignally thinking he had just broken his right back leg. After xrays we discovered he had a spiral fracture in his main bone and a brake in the other - there was a jigsaw of bones in the Xray. The vet manually aligned the bones and then put a large bandage on his leg and sent us home.

Monday came along and at first thought the surgeon was unsure he could repair the leg without sending away to a specialist. After repeat xrays they decided to go ahead with the operation. Benny was fitted with a plate and 5 swrews to secure his bones.

We were told that he would have weekly cast checks and the cast would be on for 6-8weeks. He was not to run or move quickly in this time as the plates can move before the bone grows over.

After his first week check up the cast was sitting well so they decided not to change it. 4 days later (1 1/2 weeks after op) the cast was slipping so we tool him back into the vet and left him there to have it changed. When we picked him up that afternoon they didn't have a cast on him, we were told that they never leave a cast on a dog over 2 weeks otherwise they get sores????

We trusted the vet and took him home. We had him tied up in the garage do he was nice and quite. 3 days later after no warning he went completely lame on his leg and was putting no pressure on the ground.

Worried we took him straight into the vet... The vet felt were he was operate and said everything was feeling fine however he has now torn a ligament in his hock joint!!! Completely shocked and confused we were Given the option to send him down to a specialist to get his bones fused or put a cast back on him and see if it heals itself. We had just spent a lot of $$$ on the first operation (we had only moved to this new town 1 month prior so didn't know anyone or
The vet) so we decided to put a cast on and see what happens...

He has just got his cast off a week ago (2 1/2 months since the first injury) and he is putting pressure on his leg however the vet is saying it has not healed as well as it could. We now have another 3 weeks in confinement before visiting the vet to see his progress.

We then have to make the decision to go ahead with the fusion of the bones (which is not garunteed it will work, is traumatic for the dog and we probably can't afford) or to amputate his leg...

I Would love to hear Antibes stories or advise as this has been an extremely emotional and hard 2 1/2 months and we want to do the best for our Benny boy.

Thank you

If I had an injured dog, I wouldn't tie him out in the garage. I would bring him in the house with me so I could keep a close eye on him. It could be sore because your dog won't leave it alone. Or keeps putting weight on it. You need to go buy a crate and put your dog in it after your bring your dog in the house. Until your dog gets better, I would keep him with me at all times to make sure he's safe and he isn't doing anything to himself that you aren't aware of.

We are currently living on the down stairs floor of my
Cousins house. Our living area backs straight onto the garage where we can see him all the time. We are not at all struggling to keep an eye on him nor are we struggling to keep him still. We even have our fridge in the garage he is not locked away from us in a dungeon or anything! However he is too big to have in the actual house and it is dangerous for him to be inside on the tiles as they are slippery.
I am please asking for advise if anyone has had similar injuries or ideas on rehabilitation.
