simple way to answer your question: has your dog been trained to fight other dogs and animals in a pit for the sick enjoyment of perverted human being?

then it's probably a bulldog.

only in the states is there a "pit bull" breed. everywhere else in the world, it's a job description like "sled dog" (which aren't all huskies or malamutes), "police dog" (which aren't all alsatians), or "guide dog" (which aren't all black labs or golden retrievers).

Excuse me? Your post was completely unclear and there is American Pittbull Terrier breed in the US and an American Bulldog also. The dog doesn't have to fight to be a bulldog. I don't know what kind of biased answer that was, but you don't need to be rude to our guests. I am pretty sure the OP have never even thought about fighting his dog.

that is exactly what i said: only in the states is there a "pit bull" breed. i wasn't being rude or biased at all - the fact is that "pit bull" is a job description: it is a dog from a terrier breed trained to fight in a pit.

there are many breeds that fall under "pit bull" legislation including the staffordshire terrier, the american bulldog, the cane corso, boxers, the bull mastiff, and the boston terrier.

for a (probably not) complete list of dogs commonly referred to as "pit bulls", go to www pitbulladvocate101 com slash pitbulltype.php

unless the dog is actually an American Pit Bull, it's probably an American Bulldog being mislabelled by those who don't know any better.

The original "Pit Bull" wasn't from the United States. It was from Spain where they were used to bait bulls. They were brought to the US by Spanish immigrants and traders. When it came to the United States, it became it's own breed. It originally wasn't used over here for fighting and was instead used as family dogs to guard the children.

england, not spain. and the baiting was not a blood sport - it had a practical purpose: at that time, ppl believed that riling an animal up just before slaughter tenderized the meat. bull terriers were also used to herd and control the bulls (specifically - not like herding dogs that controlled entire herds). for example, if a bull panicked and got out of control in a marketplace or on the road, the bull terrier would use various techniques to bring it back under control such as clamping down on its nose or on the ring in its nose.

the original pit bull terrier (an interesting name, btw, since a "terrier" technically means a dog that was bred to "go to ground" after vermin) was indeed a working/family dog. it was bred for stability and temperament. even after pit fighting became an accepted sport, a true pit fighting dog was anything but out of control. any human - not just the owner - could walk up to two pit fighters in full fray, pick one up and carry it away. the moment a pit fighter turned on a human, menaced one, or even balked at an order, it was shot on the spot. a "cur" was a dog that turned turtle rather than fight - the dog equivalent of throwing a match. the pit fighter would spend its evenings fighting, then happily trot home beside its master, spend the rest of the night snoozing and guarding the house and property, then spend the day romping with the kids and working around the farm.

once they were brought to the states, however, it became the usual stupid story of "bigger, badder, better" and now we have the mess we've got now.
