Default Unanswered: Help!!!!!!!!!

I have a 3 mos old Akita, and she has taken to biting my hands and lunging at my face and hair. I've had an Akita before but this one is like nothing I've ever seen before. She's even afraid to go outside on her own, which is making if very difficult to house train her. Any suggestions to stop the biting. I don't think she's doing it aggresively, just playing but those frigging teeth are sharp and I've got to nip this in the bud, soon!! Thanks

Carry an airhorn with you and blow it when your dog does that. It will scare the crap out of him. If you don't want that behavior, don't allow that behavior at all. Even a little bit is not ok. We have a no teeth rule in this house. Our dogs aren't allowed to use their teeth when they are playing with the humans.

The first thing I want to stress is you should really consider teaching her bite inhibition first. Teach your dog how to bite, she's an Akita, and bite inhibition may save some heartache in the future by working on it now.

If I had to guess, the problem you're having is your allowing her to get to a high level of excitement. Before she gets to a level 9/10 excitement, relax her at a level 5/6... Once she gets to a high level of excitement it will be very hard to redirect her to calm down. She is young so she has a lot of time to learn to control her impulse and you'll need to be on your A game for quite awhile until she starts maturing. So, again, don't allow her to get to a level 9/10 unless you are 100% in control.

Next, you need to be sure you give her the right opportunities in the right setting to work her out mentally & physically. Are you doing basic house training/ground rules with her? Is she getting enough exercise so she has an outlet for her energy? Playing with her? Ect...

As for getting her over her fear of being outdoors alone; go with her. Play with her outside. Get her mind off being scared so that she starts exploring outdoors while your around her. Work/train with her outside. Build her confidence outdoors so that she can retain the confidence when you're not around. Then she'll stop focusing on being scared and get accustomed to her surroundings.

There's a lot of info on biting and over excitement on this forum. You;ll just need to search around. Good luck. Hope to see some pics of your girl too!!!

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

As a long time experienced Akita owner I can tell you that Lange is right on the money with her advice..The only thing I would add is since Akita's have such a strong desire to be with their people sometimes giving the a firm "no" and then walking away and ignoring them for awhile will do the trick.

Akita's tend to be a "mouthy" dog in the sense that they'll put their mouth on your hand to lead you somewhere or simply because they want you to pet them..However when they're taught bite inhabition at a young age if they're still "mouthy" in the situations I've explained they do it very gently almost to where you can't even feel their teeth..My Seigi will be 2 in March and he'll do the mouthy thing with hubby but he knows I don't allow it so he just nudges me in the stomach or on my arm when he wants something..That being said Lange is very right that if Akita's are not taught bit inhabition at a young age it can lead to disaster down th road!

Kuma sometimes mouths and licks when she's happy or content but the mouthing has no pressure, it's like a mouth bath. LOL
