I don't believe that there is any insurance that covers shots and checkups. If your dog is in pain you must take him to the vet. Find one in your area that will allow you to pay in instalments.
Pups get into all sorts of bumps and scrapes but they rarely leave any damage. If your dog has a painful swelling that sounds like a serious injury. If you can't afford to get it looked at then for the sake of the dog you need to find him another home.

Even one tooth breaking the skin can cause an infection. Your dog needs to see a vet!

I would get your dog to a vet. I had a chihuahua that fell off the back of the couch and got a huge lump. He had a concussion and passed away a week later because there was infection the vet didn't see. Make sure you go to the vet. And for safe measures, have the vet prescribe antibiotics.

Taking care of pets.
If a person can't afford to properly take care of their pet then they shouldn't have them. Its not fair to the pet. Just my opinion.

Does a poor person love their pets any less than a rich person? There are people that can't afford their pet, yet when something happens to their pet, they somehow manage to find a way to help their pet get the help they need because they love their pet. Then there are people that have plenty of money and can afford to properly take care of their pets and they just chain them in the back yard or use them to fight with. If you love your dog as much as he loves you then you deserve to own a dog. Money has nothing to do with it.
Anyone who could be so close minded about how much money you have to have to own a pet needs to stop and think about about those that have money and refuse to take their pets to the vet because they don't want to waste their money on a dumb animal, while a poor person who truely loves their pet will borrow money or take up a collection to see that their pet gets the care they need.
According to your thinking, if a person loses their job and falls on hard times for a while, they are no longer qualified to own a pet and therefore should no longer own any pets. I prefer to ride out the hard times with all of my pets and find a way to make ends meet the best I can and still have my pets when things get better. Pets aren't just fair weather friends that you have when you have money. You are a horrible person for thinking that people with no money aren't properly equipped to love their pets. Money doesn't make the man.

I think this member only meant that the pet should be properly taken care of--that if it needed treatment you better find a way to get it or give it up so someone else can help it. This person I feel is just wanting the pet to be in no danger----We all love dogs here! So if that is what she meant--then I am entirely in agreement!
Lol, besides that this person has the same birthday as me!!

At the end of the day we are all agreed this pup needs to see a vet. If the OP does not have the money then he/she needs to find a way for the pup to be seen. I have had to borrow money before for my dog to be seen. If the OP is aware of the need for a vet's visit and has explored every avenue then surely he/she needs to look at giving up the pup so that he can get the care he needs?

I don't care what birthday that person has. I don't think I misunderstood them at all. If a person can't afford to take care of a pet then they shouldn't have one??? What a rude thing to say to the original poster who wanted help and advice! And it is rather close minded to think that pets are only for people who can afford them. There are millions that own pets they can't afford. If they gave up their pets because they can't afford them, the shelters would be be operating 24/7 to keep their neck above the water. I don't like extremely close minded statements like that.

I guess it can be read different ways by different people and also what has happened (background/situations) to the person who is interpreting it comes in to play too. For instance--Sami--the stray I adopted had mammary cancer--I am wondering if the people who had her knew this and just dropped her off somewhere because they had no money for the operation, etc. I really couldn't afford it either but I took care of it anyhow. If they dropped her off to get rid of her--that was definitely not taking care of this dog--I am sure Sami would of died from cancer if it wasn't taken care of. On the other hand I get this picture in my mind too of some idiot people wanting a dog and after a while could care less (When they got tired of it) whether the dog was sick or in pain and just ignored the dog and let it suffer or /and die.
I do think it would of been better to leave out the word afford in that person's post. And if you reread what she wrote without that word in it--You will see the concerns for an animal who needs taking care of. And note the title/heading of her/his post-- Taking Care of Pets---And the ending--It is not fair to the pet. Sounds to me like someone who just wants to see the pet taken good care of! Yes afford was a poor choice of words and I think the person wasn't really stressing that the way you took it. Also (and here we go with the dictionary again)-afford can mean more then just about money. Can't afford the time for instance. For instance: If a person can't afford the time to take care of their pets (and esp. if they are sick and need help) they shouldn't have them!!
The main thing here is for the dog to get the care it needs!
I didn't see your post--Cig, until i entered this post--Takes me forever to write some posts--esp. ones I am having a hard time finding the right words. But you found the right words!!

Most all pet insurance companies will 'reimburse you' after you file a claim. This means that you need to have the money set aside to pay for the services at the Vet and then wait to get the money back AFTER you have filed the claim and given them time to process it. Do not expect to see your money returned the very next day...
I made sure that I had an emergency fund set up for my girls before I ever brought them home. Worked for me... Much less stress also.

I have to post this here 'cuz it kind of fits here---although this isn't about a bump---more like a lump. I had an appointment for Sami with the vet today.(the stray I rescued a little over a year ago and found out the next day after I got her that she had mammary cancer--so she was operated on and the mammary gland removed and it looked like they got all the cancer but of course you are aware that you need to still examine in case a lump shows up and it might be the cancer---the vet told me to keep an eye out and how to check, etc. Well, I felt this lump on the side of her neck a few days ago---seemed like it appeared suddenly and of course every day it seemed to me to be getting a little bigger. It was hard to see it and I tried to cut some hair off so I could see it better. I knew it couldn't be mammary because of the location --and I still couldn't see it the best but it looked sort of dark and dry looking so I thought I'd take her to the vet--She was due for a wellness exam in another month anyway so did it early because of the lump. The vet shaved around it to get a better look. Here the dry 'patch' was a scab over a lump. And to top it off--She had an infection underneath it--It was not red like was sore or anything---until the vet removed the dry crusty layer of scab!--I had no idea that it was infected!!!--from looking at it. So it was still a lump and could not tell if it was cancer or not unless a fine needle aspirate was done and the vet can usually tell by just looking at what he gets from the needle or if it is still questionable go do an exam under the microscope--little more money then just the simple exam. Well it appeared not to look 'gelatinus, (spelled wrong I know!)cancer-like etc. so vet said it was just a cyst. Sorry, I am long winded as you all know but I am getting to my point now! If I hadn't taken Sami in to have this checked on--Who knows how bad it could of gotten--I had no idea it was infected!! Vet gave me an Animax ointment to put on it 3 times a day. He also told me to keep it clean and get this--which I would not of thought it a good idea---always was told to not remove scabs and let it heal! But if this starts to scab over that I should carefully 'scrape it' away with a wet washcloth so that the ointment can get at the infection better. Point is you should take your dog to the vet if you have concerns about the dog--and waiting too long may only make matters worse!
The wellness exam and the blood work were fine so no other problems just the one thing that I had no idea of---I had figured it would just turn out to be a fatty tumor and no problem but I need to get rid of the infection now.
