| | Guest | Who thinks dog shows are completely worthless and stupid?
I do. And the dog show crowd is completely out of touch with reality. They think their dogs are "better" than non-show dogs. They think all this focus on how the dog looks is so important, gimme a break. A dog is a dog. And when they breed their dogs, they talk all this nonsense about health-testing, blah blah blah. Health-testing dogs does not guarantee that the puppies will be healthy. If you have two dogs that function normally physically and mentally, then their is nothing wrong with breeding them. You don't need to do a health tests to prove this. It's not some big complicated science that the show breeders make it out to be. Dog shows are nothing but beauty contests for dogs, and that's just plain stupid. And the way the show crowd passes judgement on normal dog breeders is just plain wrong. They call normal breeders "backyard breeders". Gimme a break, where does the show crowd breed their dogs? In a palace? They need to get off their high horses.Opinions?

I disagree with you. I really enjoy dog shows and watch them whenever I can. I hope to attend some one day in my spare time. I like to see the dogs strut their stuff. They are graceful and perfectly trained. It takes a lot of hard work for the owners of these dogs. And the winner of these shows can get thousands of dollars. I love to watch them and I love dogs. Very entertaining.

ME! These "pure-bred" parades are just excuses for people to let their dogs (usually Rotts, Pitbulls or some freakish dog smaller than my cats) breed & sell the pups on the roadside or in the newspaper. Nevermind, the utter stupidity of spending your life primping a dog or cat, not for their health (which I do) but just for "show". As far as I am concerned, no one should intentionally breed dogs & cats. There are PLENTY OF IDIOTS who will always let their "pets" breed. Those of us who are responsible spay & neuter our pets & keep them safely confined!

Some people get real into it and enter their dogs and think they're really cool. I watch them sometimes because I like to see allthe kinds of dogs. But, I don't think a dog needs to be 'up to breed standard' to be a good dog. Mutts are perfectly good dogs too.

I here ya. It is rediculous to me as well. And who gets the prize money...the owners do. So what. the poor pooch gets some kibble and chow , thats it. I think the K-9's should train the owners. lol=). i do like watching the gogs run the obsicle courses though. That is entertaining sometimes. But again the owner wins the prize $$$$$

I wouldn't mind dog shows if it were more in depth, but to see some fat lady poke the dog in the ribs and the butte and then watch is run around an oval doen't do much at all, its more like a fashion show for the owners or would be's.. now if a show is like the one's where the dogs run thru tunnels over barriers in and out of poles and really shows what it can do, those shows are really something to watch....other than that I turn it off...

I think that dog shows are good and bad. I showed my dog and finished him. I have handled for other breeders also. I think that it has gotten a little out of hand but health testing is imperative for healthy dogs. I think that anyone who isn't willing to health test IS a backyard breeder. I also am a volunteer for Mastiff rescue and Dachshund rescue. I see both sides. Health testing might not guarantee anything but it helps a lot. Many show dogs are not just thrown together. A lot of the time with larger dogs or dogs that have a hard time there is artificial inception. Which is safer and easier on both sides. Seeing what goes on in both worlds I can honestly say health testing is right. Plus, if you really honestly care about the well being of your dogs, health testing can't do anything but help. Especially in breeds where they have high risk of certain diseases. Like in Mastiffs, hips are something that is always tested for because of their size. All responsible breeders say that every dog in every litter must be tested twice. That way you know what problems are in your lines. And hopefully, you can breed accordingly or not at all. There are just too many assholes out there trying to make a quick buck or have no idea what they are doing. That goes for pro show people and anti show people. People need to take a look at their local animal shelter and see all the perfectly good dogs that deserve homes and will never get one.

I agree. Dog show folk, in my opinion, are egomaniacs who try show superiority via their dog. Many of them are overbreeders trying to make "legitimate buck" by overbreeding. They do not think that their bringing more puppies into an already overpopulated canine society, is exploitative. Also; as a petsitter, I have found that I can not agree that their care is superlative to that of the general pet-owner. Most of their dogs are jailed in their crates too many hours each day. They fly their dogs on airplanes, storing them in extreme cold or hot non-air-pressure regulated areas (which leads to anxiety, illness, and sometimes death.) Also; their dogs are not cared for as living, feeling, loving beings; but as a status commodity for their own material welfare.
