By now you probably know whether the dogs in question were pregnant or not. But I'll toss out some general information that may be of help to others.
Virtually all female dogs experience some degree of false pregnancy if they are not bred. Some will only have mild symptoms, and you may not notice. Others can experience a full blown false pregnancy, including lactation, nesting behavior, and the adoption of some object, usually a stuffed toy, as a surrogate puppy.
The biggest danger to unspayed females who are experiencing false pregnancy is a very serious infection of the uterus called pyometra. Pyometra may have very vague symptoms such as increased water consumption, increasesd urination, and lack of appetite. Other symptoms would be a bloody or pus like discharge from the vagina.
It is vitally important to have dogs showing any abnormal symptoms after they've been in heat checked over by a vet. Untreated, pyometra is deadly. Usually the only treatment to save the dog's life is to spay her ASAP. |
