"Pedigree" Mongrel?
Have you heard of Crufts? It is the UK Kennel Club show - I think it is akin to your Westminster Show.
There is huge controversy this year as they have allowed a cross breed Dalmation/Pointer to be registered as a pedigree and shown alongside pure bred dalmations.
Fiona the mongrel and a spot of bother at Crufts: 'Impure' dalmatian angers traditionalists at the elite pedigree dog show | Mail Online
Do you think this is right?

I have nothing against Mutts, Mongrels, Mixed breeds as I have owned many in my lifetime. With that being said, I would never think to show them unless it was in a local "house pet" classification showing.

The idea apparently is to eliminate the gene that causes kidney problems. I have no understanding of genetics but surely they would be better putting money into research to establish which dogs carry the problem and then eliminating them from the breeding pool? Or am I way off track?

No, you are not off track. Any reputable breeder would never use a stud or bitch that would test positive for a genetic health issue in their breeding pool.
There is nothing wrong with importing dogs from other countries to expand the breeding pool as this more often than not assures less chance of genetic issues since in most countries, purebreds have been inbred or linebred too often. This has increased the genetic health issues. Importing has been going on for many years to help expand the breed stock and reduce the issues. I cannot see why she had to bring in a mix breed instead of simply going for purebred from the States or elsewhere, where the line had shown no genetic issues.

Yes - importing is not the issue - it's the mixed breed that seems so strange. Think I'll stick with my Jack Russells - the UK Kennel Club isn't interested in them.

Dalmations carry a genetic mutation that predisposes them to the formation of LIFE-THREATENING urate bladder stones. It is not unusual for them to need several surgeries to remove stones during their life times. Can be so severe that the dog needs to be put to sleep.----That is a quote from a book I have. If they could do away with the problem by creating a 'new' Dalmation ----Sounds like a good idea to me.--To he*l with dog shows!!
I know not much about dog showing!! But it wouldn't bother me in the least if the whole thing was done away with---or at least change some of the rules for the good of all dogs!! Dogs come 1st--Not some show! No more culling and KILLING of a dog that does not have the 'credentials either!! Why is it okay for some breeders to do that---It is still murder to me whoever does it!!!

Question; even if you test the dam & sire, can't their litters still develop said health issues?

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
