Hi,I am sure that you have heard of the big annual dog show over here in the UK called Crufts.I watch this show and have always thought about showing dogs.My dog is a three year old Jack Russell. Is it too late to start showing her now?.Do you have to start training them from a young puppy?
Hi Red Setter - dogs of all ages seem to do well at Crufts - so I am sure that 3 is not too old. As long as your dog can be trained and looks good, it could probably participate.
I love watching Crufts - especially the agility competition.
Your dog has to be KC registered before it can be shown and then it has to qualify at a championship show or win best in show at an open show before it can be shown at Crufts. You should contact your breeder or someone knowledgable in the breed to see if she is standard fitting and of show quality. You can start showing the dog as an adult but you would have to take her to ringcraft classes to teach her how to behave in the showring. Being a small dog he will stand on a table and the judge will "go over" her. The judge will check his teeth to make sure he has the correct bite (scissor, where the top incissors tightly overlap the bottom ones), feel his body structure, muscle tone, and check male dogs have two decended testicles. You will then be asked to move your dog (at a trot) so that the judge can assess his movement is correct for the breed. Once she has learned this then you can start to enter her at some shows. You would be best to start with a few open shows to gain experience and then go on to the champoinship shows where you can qualify for crufts. If she is not KC registered you can still show her at companion dog shows but she will not be able to go to Crufts. There are open or championship shows all over the country most weekends so you could maybe go and watch to see what happens.
I find Crufts fun to watch. I also love watching dogs in films, so to mark Crufts this week, I've been trying to think of all the doggy movies that there are out there. Many of these are coming up on TV.
I'd love to know which dog movie is most people's favourite.
