Default Teaching Tricks

My papillon is 1 1/2 years old, and I am wondering if it is too late to be teaching tricks? He is very smart, he understands that when I say " go get your toy" and make a throwing motion, to go pick out something to play with. He also knows how to play fetch. I really want to know how I should go about teaching the basic sit, lay down, and possibly shake hands trick. I would appreciate any tips!

It is never too late to start teaching tricks. You never stopped learning after you graduated high school. We learn something new everyday. So can dogs. Teach away!

I agree 110% with Luna, any dog of any age is able to learn given half a chance. I have a 12 year old dog at home that I adoped at 3. When he was 10 he earned his MACH.

I recommend getting a good training book or video and starting from there:

Here are two great options:

from what i was told by a vet, and i could be wrong, most dogs until they are about 3 yrs old, they are still in adolescence and their still in a learning mind frame. and a dogs almost never to old to learn a new trick(s)

i just taught rylie BANG dead dog and he has 2 different ways he dose it. one way he'll be running full speed and just tip over like a fainting goat on his back and wait until you rub his belly and the other way is he slowly creeps down and on his back until you tell him good dog lol
