old dog new tricks
Well, My Buddy, a Jack Russell, is bout 11 years old. I have been wanting to start putting him throgh agility training aloung with my sisters border collie whos a year old. This isn't for show but more of excercise to keep them busy, specially the collie. My problem is with my Buddy. First I thought the best way to teach him tricks and to help with agility would be clicker training him. The lesson I read said to click the treat, to get him to coinside the click wth a treat, only problem was after about a minut of doing this he is now very scared of the clicker. One idea is that it sounds like nail clippers and he had a bad experience when he was little getting his nails done. So we figure hes relating the click with the clippers. Can't even open the drawer the clippers are in with out him hiding. Is there a way to resolve this or should I just find another way to signal a good completion. Another issue was I had wanted to try him with fly ball but now figure that won't happen, he is scared of anything coming at him be it a ball or even popcorn. At his age should i just stick to trying other things and let this be? His teeth aren't in great shape either but thats another post in health. Thanks for anything you can help with.
