Default Weaning a dog from sleeping on one's bedroom?

I'm asking this question on behalf of my mom. I offered because, well, there are so many here with so much dog wisdom!

My parents have a little Sheltie who is very attached to my mom. He doesn't much like to be away from here and he sleeps in their bedroom. He's not in their bed or anything, but still, he has always slept in the room with them.

Within the next month or two, my dad will be starting peritoneal dialysis at night in their bedroom. This will happen every night for as long as it is necessary (as they move towards kidney transplant) and one of the requirement of this type of dialysis is that there be no animals in the room while dialysis is happening.

So. She's trying to figure out how best to go about weaning her dog off of sleeping with in their bedroom and she'd really like to begin the process as soo as she can.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

TIA!

Introduce the dog to a cage and just gradually keep the dog in the cage at nights.

Make the cage its home and make it clear that the cage isn't a punishment. Give it some nice blankets that smell like you, your dog should like that. Other than that, there isn't much you can do.
