I know to most dog and puppy owners this may seem a bit common sense; but I would like to know how do you train the pup to let you know when they need to "go" ..That is tend to natures needs..instead of doing it inside the house or on papers?

Most dogs will find a way to let you know they need to go out. I have never had to teach a dog to do that. Some of my dogs have barked, scratched at the door, or just stared at me. The most important thing is to be aware of your puppy's needs and work on housebreaking consistently. You can find more information at my site below. Just click on housebreaking when you get there. Congrats on your new pup!

I prefer to keep my dogs on scheduled potty breaks. They usually go outside every 6hrs whether they need to or not. If Natalie really has to go in between this time she lets me know by staring, barking and running towards the back door.

I think every dog has its own way of letting you know when they need out. My 2 females both just stare at the door. My male whines. The biggest thing is to just be consistent in training & knowing your pup. Sometimes they have to train you on what to look for. ;-)

Once my dogs were initially potty trained they eventually taught me how to recognize when they needed to go.

My mini schnauzer scratches lightly when the door is shut and my chihuahua jumps in the air over and over at the door until I let him out

When it is a young pup, the first thing that they would probably do is sniff for that great spot to go. So watching like a hawk, when you see pacing and sniffing, make a big deal about taking him out, and praise, praise, praise. Of course, it would be best to use the same door everytime, to make the association easier for the pup.

In the past I have had pups that did not like to tell when they needed to go. I have always used crate training. That made it easier to make as few accidents as possible. The trigger I have used for the dog to let us know they need to go is a bell tacked to the door frame. Simply take a bell attached to a string and tack it to the door frame. Every time you go to take your pup outside make them ring the bell. After time and repitition the dog will learn hey I have to go so ring ring. Do not ring the bell yourself or you will have taught the dog that when you ring they need to go.

Bagel is on a distinguished road
Default Potty Training

I have had a Beagle/Bassett mix for about 3 weeks now...he is 5 months old. He is very stubborn when it comes to pottying outside. He is crated when we are not home and hates it. He has even used his crate as his potty. The crate is not too large, but he loves to go potty in the crate and in the house. Any suggestions?
