Default Gental Leader

I recentally got a gental leader for our soon to be year old golden lab, as we tryed regular collar and leash as well as a harness and leash, neither working, our pup pulls us WAY to much, i can hardley walk him at all. this Gental leader he cant pull so its good, i have herd alot of good things about it too

I know it takes a while for the dogs to get used to using it, im just wondering if there are any good tips to help him ajust to the change... He stops every few feet and starts pawing and scratching to get it off, also burries his head in the snow/ice, im worried he's going to hurt him self.

We stop him as soon as he starts to try and take it off, and we encourage him and tell him he's a good boy when hes walking good with it, we also put it on him around the house when we are home to supervise. He's had it just under a week now, and i know it can take a fewweeks to adjust. If there are any helpful tips anyone might have please share!

THanks!

Thanks for the info Raggs, I figured there wasnt much eles to do but let him get more used to the Gental Leader

The Harness we only used a couple times realizing he didnt care. We Tryed the choke one for training but he doesnt care, he will choke him self and keep going (while still choking!!)

We are going away for christmas witch is going to inturup him getting used to the Gental leader, he is going to a really nice kennel for 3 weeks, so hopefully the lady there will put it on him sometimes to help us! or eles we will have to start over again.

Thanks for the tips though

As with all training, keep the session short in the beginning, stay upbeat, and end the session always on a great note. The dog did really well, end it for now. Sometimes only 5 min. a walk is just right in the beginning. And of course, Lots of praise for great walking behavior!

Smile Gentle leader is great!

I got a gentle leader for an 18 month old lab that I "inherited". She had had almost no training and the previous owners couldn't even walk her. I had a great deal of normal training done within about 6 weeks using a choke collar. However, I could not make any headway with her when there were other dogs around and she was an expert escape artist on the leash so I had to use two collars. While we are still working on it, with the gentle, within a week she was controllable and I don't need the second collar. I was lucky that she accepted the leader well but I rewarded her often with both praise and small treats.
