Default Training to stay off of furniture.

I have two dobies and one is a little over a year old. He has always been let on the furniture when we are home. I have been working with him to stay off the furniture so our new pup won't think she can two. I wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so big. I have got him his own bed in the living room. I have been telling him to get down when he jumps on the furniture and he does and then i tell him to lay on his bed and he does that also for a few minutes, he then will try again to get on the furniture when he thinks we are not looking. I have looked at petsmart.com and they have a spray and this mat that you can lay on the furniture that beeps when they try to get on the furniture. I was wondering if anyone has ever had to use this or if anyone else has any suggestions. Thanks so much.

The way I teach my dogs, is teach them to get up on command, and get down until they hear the command to get up again.
Sit on the couch, (furniture of your choice) call your dog and invite. Leave the couch, and sit on the floor, and call your dog to you. Give a treat. Next time you are on the couch, do not call, if he comes, tell him off, and make sure he is off. Then sit on the floor, and give a treat, soon the dog understands that the floor is treat zone, and couch is not, but when you invite, maybe he gets petting and love, so that is good too!

The problem is the dogs do not think you are serious about staying off the firnture.

Remove them from the couch by the scruff of the neck like a mama dog would and tell them to lie down in an assigned place. If they come back to the couch put them in their assigned spot and make them stay there a few minutes.

I have been working with them this evening and I put Harley in the stay position after I told him to get of the couch and he stayed for a few minutes and then he did it again and then I repeated and put him in the stay position and he stayed for five mintues. I gave him a treat and priased him. Then I was cutting my husbands hair and told him to go laydown and he would usually lay on the couch and he went and layed on his bed. I didn't have a problem with the puppy she just followed his lead. Now if I can just keep this up. I feel bad because he acts like I'm scolding him. I don't yell at him I keep a low calm vocie, I think he knows he won't be able to lounge with me anymore. Thanks so much for everyones advice.

I as having problems with my irish terrier getting up on my furniture except my terrier is over a year old. He didn't attempt the furniture until about a month ago. Now I can't get him down because he's not a little puppy and he weighs too much for my back to pick up. I actually found a helpful site that had an article called "Who Will Run the House" at a website called Petstyle. Theres a toolbar on the site that says training and i clicked on it and found it there. It was pretty helpful and gave me tips on signs your dog might be giving you that you wouldn't notice. If that doesn't help there were a couple other ones there about furniture training. Goodluck!

I had that problem with my pit bull he loved sleeping on the couch, when i was gone or went to bed. I tried grabbing him by his collar saying "NO Couch DOWN"!
Again, again the same thing grrrrrr. So i did some research online and tried this and it worked....
Take empty soda cans wash well, let dry then insert a few pennies inside each,
put one of the end of each couch cushion. The noise scares them
Hope this helps
