Default Training a rott puppy as a guard dog?

We have just adopted an 8 week old rottweiler/akita puppy (against my discretion), and she is very protective, as both breeds have a reputation to be. Where I live, it would be nice to have a dog who is watchful of us, but I do not want her to be too aggressive (also a trait of both breeds.) We have a beagle/jack russel mix, and she is not at all protective.. she loves anyone and everyone who looks in her direction. But they wrestle around and the puppy is VERY aggressive. I know that Akitas have an animal aggressive temperament. How can I train her to be protective, but not SCARY? I don't want her to be the type of dog we have to put away if we have guests. And I don't want to worry that she will outgrow the other dog and be a danger to her or my cats. However, I do like that she barks when someone comes to the door, or growls when someone unfamiliar approaches me. I just don't know how to train her not to cross the line. Is this just out of my league??

i didn't have to train my rotty their instink is to protect as long as you dont beat him or abuse him he will be loyal for ever but he is mixed that changes everything Akita's are more prone to be aggressive depends on what personality he has just be kind to him he will be over a 100 pounds

i have a rotti too and he is the best dog iv'e ever had he is very obidient, well teaching her how to protect the family, that she will do on her own, they are very smart dogs, whatever you do don't race her without children touching her cuz then in the future she could attack a child let her get familliar with children and the people she is going to be with the rest will run its course. good luck!

Rottis and Akitas are both Naturally prtective dogs. All you need to do is to love your dogs, and they will prtect you no matter what! They will only be protective when needed, as long as they are properly socialized, and loved.

I have a half lab and I am sure she would defend me if that case ever arose. She is gentle but not sure how she would do if a preditor came across her path. She loves to chase birds and squirrels and noticed when i come into the drive with my car she runs to clear a path for me. As in no birds .. etc in my drive. So you tell me ..? Does she have a thing for me.? Or is she just being a dog.

If you are going to teach it to be protective, you cannot teach it to NOT be scary. You can either teach it to NOT be protective, or you teach it to be, and he will be scary. You cannot have both ways.

I suggest NOT teaching her to be aggressive. Just develop a strong bond between you two, and she will be gentle, but if anything ever comes up where someone assaults you or one of your family, I bet that she would protect you.
