Default What is the best food reward to give a dog...

...while you are training it? We have a mutt who weighs about 30 pounds (is a bit overweight). He is old, though we have no idea quite how old because he was abandoned on our farm years ago after being abused. I really want to try training him but I am not sure what kind of food reward is best because he is overweight. My dog doesn't really like toys, at least I can't find any he does, so toys won't work for a reward.

the best treat that I have found is veggie treats. they are healthy for your dog and they taste good to them. but sertin dogs don't like them. so if they don't liek them then buy them some jerky. that always does the trick.

When I trained my dog I used popcorn. The unbuttered and unsalted kind of course. But it was cheap and the dog loved it. I made a bag and kept it in a baggie and rewarded her with bits when she did something good. Good luck!

If you want to use treats, cut/break them into tiny pea-sized pieces so you can reward him frequently without over doing it. Cut back on his daily meals to make up for the treats he received that day.

For training, I like Bil-jac frozen dog food and Natural balance meat rolls. Both of these can be broken into very small pieces.

Alternatively, you can place a portion of his regular kibble in a baggie with half a hot dog overnight to create tasty hot dog-flavored treats.

Try cheerios they aren't fating at all.I use them because I have dogs that I show and they defiantly can not be over weight so I use cheerios and they seem to like them.Try to refrain from using cheese our beef jerky it can be really fating. Also you may want to stop giving him table food and just stick to his dog food. Only feed what is indicated on the bag for his weight. And don't leave food out for him all the time because dogs seem to gorge themselves when free fed.An overweight dog is an unhealthy dog. Diabetes is bad with over weight dogs.

I have used hot dogs. Dogs love dog treats, but you get a hot dog, you will probaly get that dog to do just about anything you want. It's not like you are going to train him all day where he'd eat a bunch of hot dogs, you break them in peices when you treat him. Try changing your dog food if he is overweight, they do have food out there that is especially for overweight dogs.
