Default Dog won't potty train inside or out!!?

My mom has a five month old Japanese Chin. She got her when she was almost four months old. The dog was not potty trained whatsoever when she got her. So, she tried taking her outside to potty. The dog lays down and will not move when she takes her outside. Much less, go to the bathroom. She has tried to get her used to outside, but the dog will not change. So, she tried pee pads. The dog has gone on the pad a number of times... but only when no one is around. Finally, we realized that the dog will not go when anyone is around. So, she started leaving her alone when it was potty time. Now, it's gotten to the point where the dog just chews up and eats the pee pads and goes on the floor. She even got the 'Whiz-Dog'. The dog would not go to the bathroom on that either. The vet says she could have been scolded for going inside by the breeder, which scarred her. She uses praise when she does go on the pad and doesn't yell at her or anything when she doesn't catch her! Help!!

Does the dog keep herself clean? If she does, then you may be able to crate train her. Many dogs won't pee where they sleep, so she will have to sleep in the crate every night. Also, she will have to be in the crate whenever your mom leaves the house. Then it is important to take her outside every single time that she comes out of the crate, so she gets in a routine. It worked for both my dogs. Good luck!

for 1 you have to be very patient with the dog. they are like babies, it takes time to train them. Trust me I just got my puppy trained. It took me 3 MONTHS! she's the same type as yours. unfortunately smaller dogs are a bit harder to train. They can take up to 6 months to completely potty train. What I started out with is puppy pee pads, they have a scent in them that helps the pup learn where to go. put the pup on the pad and let it sniff around a bit. If it go on it tell the dog that that was very good and give it a small treat. If not he may not have to go. Watch the pup closely at all times. Beacuse the pup is older it will take longer to get it right. continue this step over and over every 2 hours or when you see the pup sniffing around. If you dont want to go the pee pad route, when the pup sarts to pee ar sniff around to poop take the dog outside quickly. say we go outside to potty. stay with the pup till it's done. even if it means standing there for 15 mins. give it a treat when he is done. tell the dog that it is a good dog. reapeat this step every hour or two, or untill you get to know your pups schedule.2 trust the dog. don't keep it penned up all the time. if you are gone and it pees dont yell at it its not his fault. you have to take the blame. you werent there to let him out.3 this is the hardest, never yell or hit the dog. no matter how frustraiting it may get continue these steps and give or take 1 month the dog will get it. then go get the puppysmarts potty and crate training dvd to help you out on completeing the potty training and getting your pup to let you know when he has to go.Good luck
