Reward everytime he does something good, and ignore when he doesn't do what you want, then enforce once he knows the difference.

There are some brilliant books around. Buy these but please, please don't buy a choke chain. Treat every time but then wean the dog off so that they do it by nature rather than for the food.

Well you can give him treats or just pet him and say how good he is. It just depends how good the things was that he did really.

You need to taper off when you give the treats, so you are giving only every other time and every third time. Vary it or the dog will recognize the pattern. There are studies that show that behavior is most strongly reinforced when we don't know when the reward is coming... that's why there are all those rows of people in Vegas playing the slot machines.

There are certain times in training where you should ask your friends to cooperate. For example, when you're training your dog not to jump up, you might ask your friends not to pet them when the dog jumps on them, but instead to ignore them and then pet them when the dog is sitting nicely. But it sounds like your friend has gone a little overboard. It's not really normal for someone to have their friends hold their breath so that the dog doesn't go insane. It sounds like he's not really taking a good approach to dog training.

Clicker training is the easiest. I have unruly dogs and had to do something. I started clicker training and go to obedience class. It is the quickest and easiest way to train your dog.

I train dogs so i know that if you reward them every time they'll expect a treat every time. So you should give him a treat every time only the first time and the last time and maybe in between. Also don't just reward him with treats reward him with your love and effection. Try doggy day camp they can teach your dog for you with out all the hassle.
