English Springer Spaniel- they are calmer around kids and less prone to nippiness (although I may be biased since I knew a Cocker Spaniel that was a real menace)

Let's see, kids are hyper, somewhat restless and like to play alot.Cockers are hyper, somewhat restless and like to play... alot.I've owned a few cockers. They are excellent with kids. They can be a little nippy, but you have to really be a pain to get them there.

I had a Springer when I was younger. He was really patient with kids. I was always dressing him up in little bows and plastic sunglasses and trying to ride on his back. He didn't seem to mind. And he would always wait for me at my bus stop and walk back home with me. Perfect dog for children, imo.We never really tried to train him, so I can't tell you about that, but he was definitely smart. He knew what to do when you told him things. You could say something like "Go in your house." while pointing to the dog house, and he'd go.I know someone with a Cocker Spaniel. It's really mean, but I don't know if that goes for all dogs like that or if it just has a bad personality.

i would say the cocker spaniel mostly because they are usually well behaved around children also there is a good site called pet finders that shows u different dogs based on breeds and Will tell if they are good around children. mostly though it will be u who influences whether or your dog will be good around small children so introduce them early in each others. i would just watch what u say when training 1. when giving the commands always be standing it shows your dog that u are the alfa male(female if ur wife or girlfriend is training it) 2. always say SIT "Fido" for ex. always use there name or what u call them. 3. never say sit Fido ... then when they don't sit Do Not Say sit Fido again because that would be teaching them that they need to hear two sit Fido's before sitting. and last but not least remember tone of voice when asking ur dog to come here say (as if u were trying to get a lil kid to b good) com here boy... good boy ur so smart... just nice things like that.

I have heard over the last couple of years about Springer Rage--apparently some Springer Spaniels can turn overnight into something nasty. I would ask a Vet his opinion.

Both breeds are very active! They will need lots of running to keep them happy. Both breeds are working dogs and without a purpose they tend to get moody. My springer was easy to train after he matured to about 1 year old. He is the guard of the family and he also keeps the cats in line.He gets hyper sometimes when he is running outside, and during this time he may playfully bump into our 6 year old sone and knock him over. But he has never bitten himIf you if either breed what they need then they will both do well with the whole family!
