I recommend getting a 20 lead from some place like Walmart, as they are cheap and very useful. I start by walking around a fenced in area, with treats in my pocket or in my hand. I casually walk around the yard, and from time to time I say the word "come," while the dog follows me and follow the command with a treat. I then walk around the yard, or sit some where, and ignore the dog until he wanders off and pays me no attention. At this point, I will say the dog's name and follow it with the command, "come." If your dog does not immediately run up to you, then squat down and excitedly call your dog's name and tell him what a good dog he is in a high pitched tone of voice. You can also clap your hands quickly and excitedly to encourage him to come to you. If you have him on the leash, you can also at this point pick up the handle end if it is near you (that is why I recommend such a long leash, it gives your more area to work with.) and give a firm, quick tug in your direction. When he gets to you, repeat the "come" command and follow immediately with super yummy treats like bits of hot dog or cheese. After being consistent, your dog will come you when you first call him, and you will no longer need to repeat the command when he gets to you, but can replace it with the "sit" command to calm him down when he reaches the desired position by you. Remember to work with your dog in short sessions, 10 minutes at a time 2-3 times a day, to prevent him from getting bored. Also, never tell your dog to "come" to you in order to punish him, scold or yell at him, as this will teach him not to come out of fear. Each time your dog comes to you, make it as pleasant and positive as possible for him. You will wind up with a dog that has a consistent come, and this will do wonders for you as a pet owner!
