she should either get a pet sitter or she should give the animal up and give them to someone who can look after it. Its barking because its bored and lonely.

He is a Jack Russell - clever little dogs but they need loads of exercise and stimulation. He will be incredibly bored at home all day. She could try taking him for a good long walk every morning before she goes to work to make him more tired and relaxed. Going home at lunchtime to let him out and exercise him again may help too, (or getting someone else to do this) as may providing him with some things to play with, chew toys, or one of those Korg things that you can put some food in the middle of... takes a lot of time for the dog to get it out!

Dang people are harsh on here. I love dogs, and my dogs had the same problem when we were not home. Although we never left them alone for more than seven hours at a time, we started leaving the TV or Radio on, and my neighbor said that when we did that they never once heard anything. Make sure when she gets home the dog receives affection and gets plenty of exercise. If she does not do that, than I could see her as a unfit owner, but if she makes the attempt and the dog still barks uncontrollably get a better collar. It isn't inhumane, it is more of a teaching method.

So if none of you work, how did you bring home the doggy chow? Some people have to work for a living.

Thumbs up Agree that EXERCISE is the key!

I have found from experience with my dogs and the barking issue that what Christin wrote is very true about exercise. Actually, proper exercise solves many if not most of dog behavioral issues. I have a young German Shepherd Dog who is otherwise well-trained, but has issues with neighborhood cats. When he has had an appropriate amount of daily exercise, he barks significantly less. Seems simple, but it is true. Each dog has a different need for exercise, but a vet can help a person with the amount and type. I also have a JRT and overall, these dogs are high energy all their lives.
