a bull mastiff is a big dog but not a security dog at all. they are very laid back and clam. they also sleep a lot. if you want a security dog you need to look into a german shepherd, that would be your best bet and they are easy to train. some other breeds that may be good for you are dobermans and rottweilers.

I would say a Dutch Sherperd:The Dutch Shepherds are among the most competent of all shepherd dogs at such tasks as agility, catch, obedience competitions, guard work, herding, field trailing and companionship. Attached to its territory, and an enthusiastic worker. These affectionate, happy to be around dogs are obedient, sober and very loyal to its handler and family. Friendly, loving, playful and highly energetic. A very happy dog, smile a lot. Cunningly smart. Provided children let the dogs have some peace when they want it, they can also be good friends with them. Unwanted visitors will be stopped in their tracks, while known family friends will be greeted enthusiastically. Dutch Shepherds enjoy the company of their own kind and get along fine with other animals. Intelligent, easy to obedience train and eager to learn - they learn new commands quite easily. This breed makes an excellent watch and guard dog. Active, lively and alert. The short-haired variety is the most common sort for defense/police dog trials. It needs little care and can withstand fatigue and bad weather.

Go to a local shelter! These dogs are dying for a home and are just as happy to be watch dogs. I adopted a pitbull a few months back and everyone said i was crazy. She is the sweetest most loving dog i've ever owned. I tool her to obediance training and she is unbelievable!!! Training usually costs around $100 bucks for about 6 sessions but believe me it is totally worth it. Other really good dogs are German shepards but again if you go with a breed dog you are going to be paying good $$$ for it. Check out the local shelters and see what you find! My dog only cost me $60 with shots included! Good luck on your search!!!

The best dog I have ever had was an Australian Shepherd / Queensland Healer. I know this is a medium size dog, but it is the loyalist that I have ever had. Extremely smart and easy to train. He/She is a one person/family dog. Their natural instincts are to protect what they believe is family, and turf, very quick too.I will never forget one night when my sister was taking out the trash, my dog was at the gate waiting for her return. My dog saw two men approaching on the street, towards her. Immediately, my dog ran out and placed himself in between my sister and the men. He sat, and held his ground, detouring them from coming any closer to her. The men changed their route and didn't bother her. I have never trained my dog to protect, but from what I found out from the vets is that this is a natural instinct from this dog. Best dog... hands down!

I assume you are looking for a pet which will make people think twice about breaking in??? The reason is that you mentioned price. If you were truly looking for a properly trained security dog, you would be spending several thousand dollars. You also mentioned that it has to be easy to train. This tells me (no offense) that you are not willing to invest the time in proper training.Back in October my wife and I bought the black shepherd you see in my avatar. He was owned by another family who did not have time for him. He was spastic, needy and undisciplined. He was kept either in his kennel or outside. We have had him for almost 7 months and he is drasticallly better, is protective of us and our home, gets along great with our other dog (a pit/rot mix female) and is learning german commands. You have to be willing to invest the time and money or what's the point...

If you arent experianced with training dogs I wouldnt get any of the dominate breeds like German Shepherds, Pits, and Rotties. Anydog can be trained to bark, but you do not want a dominate dog who isnt well trained near your home.
Look at some of the more gentle dogs, they will bark and alert for an intruder, but are much less likly to get its self and you in trouble for attacking the wrong person.
Check out AKC.org and look at all the different breeds, there are many out there that will protect you, just wont be a handful for an unexperianced owner.
One that pops up to me is the Irish terrier, in the temperment it was used for as family pets, guard dogs and as hunters of verman.
