Put some tiny treats in your pocket. Throw or roll a ball, tell him to fetch. you probably will have to go with him to get it, when he picks it up, give him a treat. Keep working with him like this. He will learn that if he gets the ball, he can get a treat if he brings it back to you. It takes some time but it works. Good luck.

Start at the end. Teach your dog to "release" or "give" by handing them a toy and say "release" the offer them a treat. Most dogs will happily release the toy. Do this a few times until you know the dog will give back what you throw.Next you teach them to "come". Use a flexileash and throw a piece of kibble about 3 feet and say "get it" when the get it throw another piece 3 feet in a different direction, when the dog gets the kibble say "Come" and press down on the button on the flexileash and pull your dog in then give them a piece of kibble. Feed your dog its whole dinner this way. They will learn it quick. As they get better you can throw the food further. Next is the "get it" but you just taught that with the flexileash and kibble. I add an extra step which teaches the dog to track the object in the air so they can find better or even try to catch it. Pretend like you are going to throw a ball or frisbee or what ever the dog will retrieve, and normally the dog will take off running if they do, don't throw. Do this untill the dog waits for you to throw or is watching the object during the throw. Good luck.
