Default Best place to locate a trained gentle blk lab as a companion to male who

loves dogs who just lost his wife? My father in law just lost his wife of 51 years! He loves dogs and we would love to be able to get him a black lab but he can not make it through the puppy stage. Where would be the best place to locate a fully tained black lab as a companion for him

Check out rescue! It will no be easy to find a perfectly trained dog (impossible really) but a well mannerd one should not be a problem. Check out www.petfinder.com to find a rescue in your area.He should go with a dog older than 2,5 years as Labs mature late and will be 'wild' until they are about three years old. A senior lab would probably be the best choice for him.

First, be sure your father-in-law wants a dog. Then be sure he wants a large dog. Labs are high energy and need lots of exercise. They are also very large and strong dogs. While it may be the breed you like, it may not be the best choice for him. But, if this is what he wants, all the advise on getting a rescue dog is good. I'd also add that you can get great dogs from organizations like Seeing Eye and service dog organizations. They place dogs that 'fail' their program. The person who raised the dog gets 1st choice, but if they don't want the dog, they have a waiting list of people who do. These dogs have tons of socialization and training. So check the web and see if there are any service dog groups or guide dog organizations near you.
