A puppy will show signs when it needs the loo. If it hides away or squats immediately pick it up and put it into the litter tray. Pat him while he does his buisness and make sure he doesn't come out until he's done it. Give him treats etc. Try to keep the litter tray far away from any rooms that are regualarly used by you as the smell will be disgusting. Try not to immediately clear up the buisness as smelling it will remind the puppy where to go. If he knows that when he goes to the loo in his litter box he gets a treat, he'll be eager to go there again.Make sure the box is large. You can't just buy a cat litter tray as a puppy needs much more space, and if you plan to continue making him go to the loo in the tray, he'll need a lot of space once he's fully gown.Although it might be fun to trey it, I think you shouldn't only allow the puppy to go to the loo in his litter tray. This would be good if he needed it in the night, but he should still be taken for walks. Otherwise he'll have much too much energy and will start to misbehave. A dog needs freedom and a chance to explore so make sure that even if he's litter trained, he has planty of walks. If you were away for the day though, a litter trained puppy would be great! Good luck if you do try!

I had heard of this, and thought about doing it, but just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe that would be a good project to get her ready for next winter. The thought of not having to take her out every few hours in below zero temps ought to be enough motivation - for me, at least!
