when he leaves the yard call him back and give him a treat because then the dog will think he will get a treat if he stays in the yard?

For goodness sake get a fence, a dog run, or keep your dog in the house. Its incredibly irresponsible, not to mention illegal in a lot of states, to let your dog run around the neighborhood off leash, especially if its aggressive and is biting people. You are lucky the dog hasn't been impounded, and you haven't been fined.

Keep the dog on a tie-out chain!!! Why anyone would allow their dog to roam free is beyond me. If your dog ever gets hit by a car/truck/bus you'll wish you had.

Put the dog inside the yard and make it impossible for the dog to get out. i.e. A fence with a gate for you. or, Give him a treat when the dog stays in the yard and smack him when he doesn't.

for me the best thing to do was to get a tie out and continue to put him on that for about a year shortly after that they learn that this is their home...you should also get a whistle and train himm to come to that along with your voice... in order to do that you can tell him to stay say across the room then blow the whistle and when he comes reward him and give him a treat.. like all traioning it will take some time but if you use the whistle it should go a little faster than if you only do the tie out.

You can't. Fence him in. This causes him to have his own place to romp, while your busy and those neighbors won't worry about your dog attacking their children. To train it not to eat shoes get him a wide variety of toys and when he's chewing shoes get him interested in a toy. Rubbing Tabasco on stuff he's not supposed to chew helps. A reason he's so restless is because you may not be walking him enough or needs you to set up an obstacle so he's being challenged.

Get a fence or put him on a runner. A runner isn't as bad as a leash they can still run around but they are limited on how far they can go. You could also try obedience training at your local PETCO or PETSMART. As for the shoes I think they sell stuff at the petstore you can put on them that won't damage the shoe but tastes really bad to the dog so they won't want them anymore, and get him some rawhide chews for him to give him something he can chew on and keep him busy. Just don't get pigears some have some kind of gravy or they are basted and it gives dogs diarrhea. *** Don't do as Baromi S suggested and smack him cause all that will do is hurt the dog and make him act out even more, and make him afraid of you so he won't want to listen to you so if your trying to get him back in the yard and he thinks your going to hit him he'll just keep running away from you.

(You have to have your dog know the following command: Come) Walk your dog around the permeter of your yard and when he/she goes out of the permeter you tug on the leash a little bit bring him/her back into the permeter of your yard. Do that for a few weeks and then relese him/her off of his/her leash and if he/she goes out of the permeter call him/her back and give him/her a reward! Keep trying untill he/she gets it right!

I don't believe I'm reading these posts! Shock collars? Leaving the dog tied out on a chain? Smacking the dog? What is wrong with you people? If you want to have a dog, do the right thing and erect a fence. If not, give the dog to someone who will behave responsibly and care properly for the poor thing.

Surely these aren't real posters, just some one baiting us, to upset us. I mean, some one suggested shooting the dog to avoid being sued. And shock collars and smacking? Those can't be real suggestions, and they all came from people doing their first post. I can't see anyone coming to a forum called I Love Dogs and seriously suggesting shooting. Doesn't make sense.

Unfortunately, this happens a lot. I have posted in a few different forums dedicated to animal lovers, and this has happened in every one. It is sad, that some one would come here with the sole purpose of angering and upsetting people. What an empty life people like this must lead.

Thumbs down How do I train my dog to stay in my yard???

To the OP - put up a suitable fence around your property to contain your dog.

I can't believe someone could be so irresponsible to allow their dog to roam the neighbourhood - not only biting people but also running the risk of being hit by a car or attacked by other animals.

For god sake - act like a responsible dog owner or rehome the poor thing.

Hi! I've seen a few of these ridiculous threads, and I've noticed a trend... ALL the first page posts are first time users to the forum, they all have '1' by the number of posts... don't know what they get out of it, or why they do it. I've made a habit now of checking # of posts on ridiculous threads, and ignoring them!! But indeed, what an empty life they must have to waste time this way.

My dogs stay in my yard without any type of fence. I rescued a dog and when I took it out, I took it out an a lead and ran her around the perimeter of my yard. I did it everytime I took her out. If she even looked like she was interested in what was going on outside the yard, she wouls get a firm voice correction and a correction on her lead if she looked like she was going to leave the yard. It took her 2 weeks to learn her boundaries. But she has never left the yard unless I was with her and she was on a lead. It is called perimeter training. The puppy picked it up the first day. Smart fellow. Also, I never leave my dogs outside by themselves. I am not worried about them running off, but about someone taking them. And if you are in the yard looking after them, like what you would do with your kids, they are more likely to stay in the yard then run off after they learn wherer they are allowed to roam.
