How do you discipline a puppy?

I don't want to hit or be violent when training my puppy because it can cause later problems. My Aunty adopted a dog who was so scared of people that it would uncontrollably wet itself, it was so frightened.So I don't want to use violence, but I don't think that a stern voice is enough to reprimand them or teach them not to do whatever it is that is wrong.
