What's the best way to Housebreak new dog? I'm interested in getting a puppy, probably a beagle, and I need all the info first. I've got some great books from the Library, the best being "Superpuppy". It gives methods like paper training, "true" housebreaking, and cage training, but it doesn't give an opinion or info on which is best. I know each dog is probably going to be different, but I need the most effective method, because this is one of the things my parents are more skeptical about.

Yes, definitely be prepared afore you get a dog!
I used the newspaper method, litter-box training and crate training. As I remember, I like the crate training best, I ended up give my puppy more attention because I had to let her out every so often to let her "go" thus enticing me to spend more time with her. Plus, I don't think you will have as many accidents, because dogs HATE "going" in their "bedrooms", i.e crates. You just have to make sure that the crate is not too large. You can get a crate that will fit your dog when it is full grown, just block off part of it to make it small enough for your pup.
You will also have less accidents cause you will be playing with her after
she "goes".

Generally, you should use the outdoor housebreaking plan for Fido if:

1. He's a large dog whose puddles and piles are too big to be part of civilized, indoor society.
2. Your schedule allows you to get him to his potty area regularly or he can take himself out through a doggie door.
3. You have access to an outdoor area that is appropriate for use as a dog toilet.

You should use the indoor potty training plan for Fido if:

1. He's very small and his pees and poos won't be terribly offensive indoors.
2. You work very long hours and can't give him outdoor access on a regular schedule.
3. You don't have access to a suitable outdoor potty area.
4. You plan to permanently allow him to use an indoor potty area.

Crate training is appropriate for both methods and will prevent mistakes when you aren't able to supervise your new baby directly. Using the above information as a guide, I chose litter box training for my little chihuahua, as I am not worried about his tiny messes and I didn't want to have to take him down several flights of stairs many times a day. If I ever get a house with a yard, I may try to train him to potty outside, but for now I am really happy with the indoor potty training.

won't you be in school? perhaps an adult dog would be a better choice & your parents would be more acceptable of the idea.
