Default How do you train your dog to NOT jump fences?

My wife and I have a 6-7 yr old German Shorthaired Pointer. He's a great bird dog (Pheasant) and has a very lovable personality as well. I've never even heard him bark, growl or anything like that. He does, however, sometimes jump our fence. A couple times when we've been at work, he's pushed the latch up in his kennel and was out of our yard when I got home. We live on a relatively busy street, so this is a problem. I've heard that there are sensors you can bury that link to a sensor on his collar, which gives him a shock if he gets too close, thereby "training" him to stay in a certian area. Do these work, or do you have other suggestions? We've had him a little over a year. I scold him every time he does it, yet it just doesn't seem to sink in.

Sounds like you need a higher fence.

Ok, this may sound cruel, but I swear it worked for us. We had gotten 2 6-month old Bluetick Coonhound pups. One of them has turned out to be Houdini, even though we live on 5 acres, you know the grass is always greener... Murl decided that he can climb, jump and scale any fence around. This became very frustrating as we would tie him up and he would slip his collar, we put a harness on him and he learned how to back out of it. It was so bad my significant other was talking about getting rid of Murl. Our final option was to try a remote controlled shock collar. It took one shock at each of his favorite getting out points and the problem was cured. The shock collar we bought had different settings and it emits a beeping tone prior to the shock. Now all it takes is a beep and just as you would use the word no and he obeys promptly, he no longer has a desire to escape his yard and I can walk him anywhere without a leash.Hope this helps.

Look for an electric fence by Innotek. They make great products and can outfit you with exactly what you need. Be prepared to spend about 2-300 dollars. It's much more simple than putting in a higher fence. After he shocks himself 3 or 4 times, he'll get the point. My boss has a Vizsla, and that dog is insane, but when he sees the remote or gets within an inch of that fence, he knows to relax. They aren't mean or cruel, they are effective and you won't have to worry about your dog getting out. Takes a Saturday afternoon to install, you can do it yourself. Take my word for it.

We had a gordon setter that always jumped out of the fenced in back yard, so one of us set up outside the fence with a five gallon bucket of water and another one walked around the block to entice the setter to jump out. Just as he was going over he got hit with the water. He never jumped out again. You must also need to know that he hated water.
