Can anyone tell me how to train my Staffordshire bull terrier to stop biting dogs?
He is well trained in the house, but it is becoming a real pain to walk him, he pulls on the lead constantly and cannot mix with other dog apart from our other staffy bitch. We really are at a loss about what we can do to help him as he has to be muzzled each time he is out which is unfair . I have thought about re-homing him but this isn't a option as in the wrong hands he could be used for fighting. If any one has been in a simalar situation please help.

Your answer is within your own question. You simply must deal with having a fighting dog for a pet. So protect others from him at all times. Take him to a group training class and keep him socializing with the muzzel on. If he is not already nutered, do him the biggest favor and you! Get that done. It could make a tremendous difference for the good!Best of luck!

How old is this dog? What kind of a collar are you using?Let me suggest this as though he is an adult dog. First of all get a collar the will give you control. As long as he is in control you can't do anything. If you are using a regular collar, get a choker/training collar and use it properly. If you are using a choker/training collar and it isn't working try a prong/pinch (it is more humain if used correctly).Once you have him under control and walking without pulling you then keep the mussle on him and expose him to other dogs. If you have some one that is willing to help you and they have a dog this would be perfect. Then you set up the dogs. Have a friend to walk past you with your dog on a sit stay. If he lunges for the dog as it passes by correct him and make him sit again.Continue this until your dog ignors the dog as they pass by. Then reverse the situtation. Have your friend and their dog sit stay as you walk your dog by.All you are doing is to condition you dog to look to you for control and ignore any other dog or person. This may take a while to accomplish but continue working with him until you feel safe doing this without the muzzle. These dogs are very headstrong and don't be surprised when you start this training and you see him improve and then all of a sudden he tries to revert back. This is their way of basically saying, "Are you sure I can't be this way?" Be very consistant with this work. Please do not "re-home" this dog. You are the one that can read this dog and know what to expect from him. You are smart to realize that he would probably end up being fought. My Son has been raising this breed for 14 years and they should be socialized not only with people but with other dogs at a very young age to avoid a lot of problems because they are very controlling, dominate breed. Good luck and keep working with him.

~If your dog is biting others then you do not have proper control over him, please get a trainer.~I have a highly dog agressive APBT I started him in private training lessons and now after he has gone through only 4 classes with an awesome trainer he can be in a regular group training class. You nust find a good trainer willing to work with a agressive dog because some will NOT! ~As for walking, you can try a couple things: everytime your dog pulls ahead yank the leash & pull him in the oppisite direction, once you have is full attention turn around & continue on you walk (only do this using a flat collar) do it continuosly not once or twice & think oh it's not working... it takes time! If you don't already have one then you could try using a prong collar, Make sure you get someone to show you the proper way to use it!! Too many people put these collars on thier dogs and Do Not know the proper way, so it does not make a difference*****Please do not use a choker all they do is CHOKE a dog that pulls!!!*****
