Default How do I toilet-train a 5 year old dog?

My 5 year-old silkypoo (silky terrier crossed with poodle) enjoys peeing and defecating all over the living room at night when the entire household is fast asleep. He only does this at night which gets all of us really mad. In the daytime, he will obediently pee on newspapers sprawled out for him over in an air well (open air space in the house). Anyone knows why he does this and how to make sure he does his business at the appropriate place all the time?

almost impossible - The dog is intentionally doing this to seek revenge - sounds like you don't allow the dog to sleep near you.You can try a cage - the dog ain't going to urinate or defecate where he sleeps.I would take the dog outside - and give him a treat when he goesI would put the dog nose in the waste done inside and then put the dog in the cage for awhile - You are at war with the dog for first allowing the dog to have control over you. Making on paper inside at 5 years - give me a break. As to someones complaint that you posted question twice = perhaps you post it - could not find it and then re-did it.

I think your dog is screaming as loud as he can that he wants some outdoor time. Don't you have a yard he can play in? Is there a dog park in your neighborhood you can take him to for a few hours a week? Do you walk him outside regularly? If this dog never gets to go outside, he will have pecular reactions to it.You are right, you can crate the dog at night but if he isn't getting outside play time, he will exhibit some other strange behavior that will be equally annoying. Why do you have an adult dog "paper trained"? He should be going outside and you or some other human should go with him...even better if other dogs went with him and his favorite human. This dog is stressing out and trying to tell you something in the only way he can. Think, focus on your dog for a minute and try to see what he's trying to say. He doesn't really want to annoy you...it just seems that way from your point of view. Maybe its true he wants to play with you...so play with him in a more acceptable way...take him on morning walks. It would be good for everyone.
